What is a Skadden Fellowship?

A Skadden Fellowship is a prestigious, two-year public interest law fellowship awarded annually to graduating law students and recent law graduates in the United States. Sponsored by the Skadden Foundation, these fellowships support individuals who wish to pursue full-time work providing legal services to underserved or marginalized communities. Recipients, known as Skadden Fellows, design their own projects in partnership with nonprofit organizations. The fellowship provides salary and benefits, allowing fellows to focus on impactful legal work early in their careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Skadden Fellow?

To thrive as a Skadden Fellow, you need a strong commitment to public interest law, exceptional legal research and writing skills, and a J.D. degree. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management systems, and sometimes bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction are typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with clients and partner organizations make candidates stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial because Skadden Fellows must develop and execute innovative legal projects serving underserved communities while upholding the highest professional standards.

Building strong relationships with mentors and colleagues, proactively seeking feedback, and leveraging the support of the Skadden network can help fellows overcome these challenges and maximize their effectiveness during the fellowship.
