What Is a Site Reliability Engineer?

A site reliability engineer specializes in site reliability engineering, or SRE, a specific branch of operations first pioneered by Google. You are responsible for ensuring that when a website decides to scale a particular feature for various users to access, it does not break the underlying software or website functions. This means you need to use analytical problem-solving skills to determine how to make specific features on a new software release work on top of existing source code.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, systems administration, and software engineering, often supported by a degree in a technical field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), container orchestration (such as Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform or Ansible), and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana) is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a proactive mindset help SREs excel at incident management and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for maintaining system reliability, minimizing downtime, and driving continuous improvement in complex technical environments.

What are some of the most common challenges Site Reliability Engineers face when balancing system reliability with rapid software delivery?

Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) often navigate the challenge of maintaining highly reliable systems while supporting fast-paced software releases. This involves managing incidents, automating processes to reduce manual toil, and working closely with development teams to embed reliability into the software development lifecycle. SREs must carefully prioritize their efforts between proactive improvements and urgent, reactive fire-fighting. Effective communication and collaboration with both operations and development teams are crucial to ensuring service uptime without slowing down innovation.

What is the difference between Site Reliability Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectSite Reliability EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a computer science degree, certifications like AWS, Google Cloud, or KubernetesSimilar credentials, often with cloud certifications and scripting skills
Work EnvironmentFocuses on maintaining and improving system reliability, often in large-scale production environmentsWorks on automation, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes across development and operations teams
Industry UsageCommon in tech, cloud services, and large-scale enterprise companiesWidely used in software development, cloud, and IT organizations

Both roles require strong technical skills and cloud knowledge, but SREs focus more on system reliability and uptime, while DevOps engineers emphasize automation and deployment processes. They often collaborate but have distinct primary responsibilities.

Job description

Your Impact

As a Senior SRE on the APX SRE CloudOps team, you will design and build the cloud infrastructure and automation platforms that Axon's product engineering teams depend on. You will architect solutions for multi-cloud environments (Azure, AWS), FedRAMP compliance boundaries, and large-scale Kubernetes platforms serving production workloads across multiple regions. You will spend a significant portion of your time writing code: building services, APIs, and internal tooling using languages like Go and Python. You will also participate in on-call rotations and incident response, using operational experience to drive reliability improvements and inform platform investment. This role combines software engineering depth with cloud architecture at scale and production ownership.
Location - This role is based out of our Atlanta, Seattle, or Boston office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.

What You'll Do
  • Design and implement services, APIs, and automation tooling that improve cloud infrastructure reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Write production-quality code in Go, Python, or similar. Lead design reviews and set code quality standards within the team.
  • Build robust, easy-to-use foundational platforms and tools that enable engineering teams to provision services rapidly, consistently, securely, and cost-effectively.
  • Architect cloud infrastructure across Azure and AWS, including Kubernetes platforms, networking, and identity boundaries.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response. Use operational experience to identify systemic reliability risks and drive platform improvements.
  • Foresee and mitigate risks in infrastructure design: single points of failure, scaling bottlenecks, security gaps, and compliance drift.
  • Influence and educate the engineering organization to adopt new and improved architectural patterns.
  • Leverage AI tooling and agentic workflows to accelerate engineering delivery and operational automation.
  • Provide robust documentation for use by engineers to promote self-service.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code review, design guidance, and pairing.
What You Bring
  • This position involves handling of classified federal data; under federal regulations, it is open to U.S. citizens only.
  • 8+ years of applicable experience in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, or site reliability engineering.
  • Experience designing and operating cloud platforms at scale across Azure, AWS, or similar.
  • Proficiency in one or more managed languages (Go, Python, Java, C#) in the context of building services, not just scripting.
  • Experience architecting and operating Kubernetes platforms (AKS, EKS, or similar) at production scale.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK, or similar) for managing multi-environment, multi-region infrastructure.
  • Experience utilizing CI/CD platforms to automate provisioning infrastructure, software builds, tests, and releases.
  • Experience using observability tools such as APM, logging, and metrics to assist with debugging issues.
  • Track record of leading design reviews, writing technical proposals, and setting engineering standards within a team.
  • Builder-operator mindset with proven production ownership (uptime, SLOs, on-call, incident leadership).
  • Experience mentoring engineers and conducting technical interviews.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate engineering workflows is a strong plus.
Benefits that Benefit You
  • Competitive salary and 401k with employer match
  • Discretionary time off
  • Paid parental leave for all
  • Medical, Dental, Vision plans
  • Fitness Programs
  • Emotional & Development Programs
  • And yes, we have snacks in our offices

Benefits listed herein may vary depending on the nature of your employment and the location where you work.
