Job description

Job Title:        Assistant - Clinic Elementary School  Wage/Hour Status:  Nonexempt
Reports to:     Principal/Nurse                                   Pay Grade:               IS 3 - 187 Days
Dept./School:  Assigned Campus                              Date Revised:          January 6, 2023         
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
            Assist school nurse (RN) by assuming routine recordkeeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse.
QUALIFICATIONS:
            Education/Certification
            High school diploma or GED
            American Heart First Aid certification or CPR certification
            CNA or CMA Certification
            Special Knowledge/Skills:
            Proficient in computer skills
            Effective communication and interpersonal skills
            Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
            Preferred Experience:
            Previous successful experience working with children in private schools, licensed day-care centers, camps or as acceptable to the employer.
            Electronic Health Record experience preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Health Services:
  1. Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illness according to a detailed                protocol established by the school nurse (RN) or medical advisor.
  2. Administer medication to students in compliance with procedures established by Board        Policy and administrative procedures, maintain accurate log of medications dispensed.
  3. Assist with health procedures and screening programs as delegated and supervised by      the school nurse.
  4. Assist in the maintenance of the personal hygiene of students.
  5. Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to                      established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
  6. Contact EMS according to established school health services protocols or as directed by     the school nurse (RN).
  7. Escort students to and from health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary
  8. Provide simple nursing and first aid care and gives emergency care within the framework     of the American First Aid training and district Health Services policies and procedures.
  9. Keep the school nurse informed of students' status and any unusual happenings with           students.
  10. Maintain for the nurse the absentee status of students excluded and readmitted due to         health reasons, especially in regard to communicable disease control.
  Safety 
  1. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound    care.
  2. Keep health clinic clean and sanitary.
 
Clerical
  1. Assist the school nurse in record keeping as directed.
  2. Answer clinic telephone, types health reports, and performs other clerical duties as               requested by the school nurse or principal.
  3. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
  4. Prepare and arrange bulletin boards, displays, models, etc.
  5. Send out routine notices to parents
  6. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other            documents required, including accurate, updated health records on all students.
  7. Prepare correspondence, reports, and records using personal computer or typewriter.
  8. Make appointments for and maintain schedule of the school nurse (RN).
  9. Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including reportable accidents,
communicable disease data, and referrals to school nurse (RN).
Compliance
  1. Maintain confidentiality of all information.
  2. Participate in in-service training programs.
  3. Refer all inquiries by other school personnel concerning students to the school nurse and    will not diagnose, prescribe, or give any medical advice, nor release any information             regarding the health of students
  4. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board         policy.
  5. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health                 rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
     Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
