Position: Lead Custodian - Edustaff
Location: Simonds Elementary
Work schedule: 6:00 am - 2:30pm, some overtime expected
Pay Rate: $19.90- $24.13 DOQ
The Lead Maintenance and Custodian is responsible for supporting the daily operation, cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of Simonds Elementary school building and grounds. This position performs routine custodial, maintenance, and minor repair duties while also providing daily direction and support to custodial staff assigned to the building. The Lead Maintenance and Custodian works closely with building administration and the Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation Department (MOT) to ensure the school is clean, safe, welcoming, and properly maintained for students, staff, families, and visitors. This position also assists with building inspections, event setup, work order coordination, supply management, snow removal support, and identifying maintenance needs in a timely and professional manner.
RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Plan, organize, prioritize, and schedule daily custodial and building maintenance services at Simonds Elementary, including routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, minor repairs, facility preparation, and other assigned tasks necessary to maintain a safe, clean, and efficient school environment.
• Provide leadership, direction, and support to assigned custodial staff; assist with daily work, monitoring building needs, promoting accountability, and ensuring custodial and maintenance tasks are completed in a timely and satisfactory manner.
• Assist Simonds Elementary staff with the safe and orderly arrival and dismissal of students, including support with building access, exterior monitoring, traffic flow assistance, and general student safety as directed by building administration.
• Monitor inventory levels of maintenance, instructional, custodial, and building supplies; order, receive, store, organize, and distribute supplies and materials as directed; maintain appropriate records and communicate supply needs in a timely manner.
• Communicate regularly with building administration, district maintenance staff, custodial staff, contractors, vendors, and other personnel regarding building needs, work orders, safety concerns, event setup, cleaning schedules, maintenance issues, and operational priorities.
• Maintain a positive, professional, and service-oriented working relationship with students, staff, administrators, families, vendors, contractors, and community members using the facility.

Custodial

• Lead and participate in the daily cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing of classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, staff areas, storage areas, entrances, and other assigned areas of the school building.
• Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, urinals, partitions, mirrors, tile, counters, fixtures, and other restroom surfaces; restock soap, paper towel, toilet paper, sanitizer, and other dispensers as needed.  
• Dust, clean, and polish furniture, woodwork, counters, shelving, doors, windows, glass surfaces, and other fixtures; empty waste and recycling receptacles; remove gum, debris, spills, graffiti, and other hazards as needed.  
• Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax, buff, and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, hallways, and other work areas; spot clean, extract, and shampoo carpets as assigned.
• Pick up paper, trash, and debris from school grounds, playgrounds, walkways, parking areas, entrances, and areas adjacent to school facilities; sweep sidewalks and concrete surfaces around the building as needed
• Operate and maintain custodial equipment including vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, auto scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, steam cleaners, mops, ladders, small hand tools, power tools, and other equipment as assigned.
• Coordinate and assist with facility use by school groups, community organizations, and outside groups; prepare spaces for meetings, programs, assemblies, elections, athletic events, after-school activities, and other special events.
• Move, arrange, and reset furniture, tables, chairs, equipment, supplies, and other materials for school activities, classroom needs, special events, and facility rentals
• Assist with summer cleaning, deep cleaning, floor care, classroom restoration, furniture movement, and other building preparation activities during school breaks and vacation periods
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 
  

Maintenance

• Unlock and lock doors and gates; raise and lower flags; check door readers, access points, and building entry areas daily; verify that the building is properly secured and alarms are set as appropriate.
• Inspect the building, grounds, playground areas, entrances, mechanical rooms, roofs, and other assigned areas for safety, cleanliness, security, and maintenance concerns; report or correct issues in a timely manner.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repair work throughout the building, including adjustments, replacements, inspections, and general upkeep of building systems and equipment.
• Lead and participate in maintenance restoration activities during school vacation periods, including cleaning, filter replacement, belt replacement, HVAC cleaning, equipment checks, and other preventative maintenance tasks.
• Inspect, maintain, and perform basic repairs on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including boilers, air handlers, unit ventilators, rooftop units, exhaust fans, and related equipment, within the scope of training and ability.
• Replace air filters, belts, ceiling tiles, light bulbs, batteries, and other routine building components as needed or as directed.
• Identify, document, and report safety, sanitary, security, maintenance, and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; submit work orders or notify the appropriate department when repairs are beyond the scope of the position
• Communicate and coordinate with district maintenance personnel, outside contractors, inspectors, vendors, and service providers to exchange information, assist with access, monitor work areas, and help resolve maintenance issues or concerns.
• Maintain records related to facility use, custodial schedules, inspections, playground checks, roofing concerns, inventory, equipment, preventative maintenance, and other assigned activities as required.
• Assist with snow and ice removal at Simonds Elementary and other District facilities as needed, including availability for overtime during early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather events.
• Perform grounds-related duties including weeding, weed control, trash removal, exterior cleanup, playground inspections, minor landscaping support, and general upkeep of exterior areas surrounding Simonds Elementary.
• Support District maintenance operations as needed, including responding to building emergencies, weather-related events, equipment issues, security concerns, and other urgent facility needs.

OTHER DUTIES:

• Perform any and all custodial, maintenance, preventative maintenance, grounds, setup, repair, and facility support activities as required.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation Department, building administration, or other appropriate District personnel.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial and maintenance work.
• Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
• Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Any combination equivalent to:  two years of custodial and maintenance work experience.

• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of custodial and maintenance equipment.

• Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
• Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
• Climbing ladders and working from heights to replace light bulbs and perform other departmental activities such as roof inspections.

HAZARDS:

• Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals.
