Simoa information

What is a Simoa analyst or technician?

Simoa analysts or technicians are professionals who operate and manage Simoa (Single Molecule Array) technology, a highly sensitive platform used for detecting and quantifying low-abundance biomarkers in biological samples. Their primary responsibilities include preparing samples, running assays on Simoa instruments, interpreting results, and maintaining laboratory equipment. These specialists often work in clinical or research labs, supporting studies in areas such as neurology, oncology, and infectious diseases. They must be familiar with laboratory protocols, data analysis, and quality control procedures to ensure accurate and reliable results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Simoa research scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simoa Research Scientist, you need a strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology, or immunology, often supported by a graduate degree in a related field. Experience with Simoa analyzers, ELISA platforms, and data analysis software such as SoftMax Pro or Prism is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for designing experiments and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate biomarker quantification, robust experimental results, and successful contributions in a cutting-edge diagnostics environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Simoa assay technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Simoa assay technicians often encounter challenges such as maintaining assay precision, troubleshooting instrument errors, and handling sensitive biological samples. To address these, technicians regularly calibrate and maintain equipment, strictly follow standard operating procedures, and collaborate closely with scientists and lab managers. Staying updated on best practices and participating in ongoing training can also help mitigate common issues and ensure reliable results.

This person will provide a link between the Technology team and the development teams, including engineering and assay teams, to transfer new technologies from feasibility into full development. The Senior Scientist will be expected to communicate their work through presentations at conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Feasibility research to enable new Simoa technologies
  • Evaluation of assay performance of new Simoa technologies
  • Collaboration with engineers and scientists in the Technology group on hardware development and image analysis
  • Interacting with engineering and assay development groups to transfer new Simoa technologies from feasibility to full development
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• PhD in biological or physical sciences.
• Strong background in technology development pertaining to novel assay and system development.
• Strong background in experimental design and communication of scientific results.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• More than 3 years of experience in biomedical research or the biotech/life sciences industry.
• Industrial experience in assay and instrumentation development.
• Proven track record of developing technologies at the interface of assays and instrumentation.
• Ability to develop a deep understanding of technological impact on assay data, including image analysis and instrumentation process steps.
• Experience with protein and surface conjugation methods.
• Excellent quantitative analytical skills, including the ability to synthesize complex data sets and prepare summative reports.
• Proven ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary environment.
