What are some common challenges faced by LC-MS Scientists when developing new analytical methods?

LC-MS Scientists often encounter challenges such as matrix effects, where components in the sample interfere with analyte detection, and the need to balance sensitivity with specificity. Method development also requires careful optimization of sample preparation, chromatographic conditions, and mass spectrometer settings to achieve accurate, reliable results. Collaboration with colleagues in sample preparation, data analysis, and quality assurance is key to troubleshooting and refining methods. Staying current with advancements in instrumentation and software can also help overcome technical challenges and improve workflow efficiency.

What are LC-MS scientists?

LC-MS scientists are analytical chemists who specialize in using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques to identify, quantify, and analyze chemical compounds in various samples. They play a critical role in fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental science, food safety, and biotechnology by preparing samples, operating LC-MS instruments, and interpreting complex data. Their work helps ensure product safety, compliance with regulations, and advances in research and development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LC-MS Scientist, and why are they important?

To excel as an LC-MS Scientist, a strong background in analytical chemistry, experience with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant scientific field are essential. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as MassLynx or Xcalibur), instrument calibration, and method development is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help scientists interpret data accurately and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring high-quality analytical results and supporting research or regulatory compliance in laboratory settings.

Job description

Senior / Principal LC-MS Scientist

Columbia, Missouri (on-site)

Relocation assistance available

We are searching for a Senior / Principal LC-MS Scientist to join a growing bioanalytical team in Columbia, MO. This is a hands-on role within a GLP-regulated environment, supporting bioanalytical studies from method development through reporting. The team is continuing to build, so this role is best suited for someone who is comfortable working independently and taking ownership of their work.

What you’ll be doing

  • Develop, validate, and execute LC-MS methods for bioanalytical studies
  • Analyze biological samples (plasma, tissue, etc.) using LC-MS/MS systems
  • Interpret data and prepare clear, accurate reports for clients
  • Participate in client communications, including study updates and data discussions
  • Ensure adherence to GLP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Review study data and documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Support instrument calibration, maintenance, and optimization (Shimadzu, SCIEX, or similar)
  • Collaborate with internal scientific, regulatory, and operational teams

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, or related field
  • NO LESS THAN 3+ years of hands-on LC-MS experience (more for Principal level)
  • Direct experience working in a GLP environment (required)
  • Strong understanding of method development, validation, and sample analysis
  • Ability to manage multiple studies and meet timelines
  • Strong communication skills

Nice to have

  • Experience in a CRO setting
  • Prior team lead or mentoring experience
  • Exposure to client-facing work
  • Experience with Shimadzu, SCIEX, or similar platforms
  • Experience with Watson or similar systems

Additional insight

This is not a highly structured, task-by-task role. The team is still building, and the right candidate will be someone who can work autonomously, take initiative, and operate effectively without needing day-to-day direction.
