Job Description
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Part-Time Traffic Signal Timing Engineer!
This position will work out of the Tampa, FL or Bradenton, FL area.
This Opportunity
Responsibilities include:
  • Develop, integrate, and fine-tune signal timing changes.
  • Provide supervision and directions for signal operational modifications.
  • Conduct field reviews when it is necessary to evaluate traffic operation issues as well as to resolve signal operation issues.
  • Ensure signal operation modifications are signed and sealed and properly documented in accordance with client policies and guidelines.
  • Prepare system performance reports.
  • Assist WSP's signal timing team with signal/system retiming efforts.
  • Assist in reporting results and effects of signal retiming efforts.
  • Actively monitor signal systems and other arterial ITS infrastructure, analyze traffic data and recommend/perform actions to improve arterial traffic operations.
  • Provide guidance to develop, update, and maintain signal timing changes.
  • Support CV/AV technology implementation, monitor/operate CV/AV related applications and devices.
  • Provide signal phasing recommendations and changes to address recurring and non-recurring congestion.
  • Facilitate traffic operations by guiding arterial operation decisions, implementing special events response plans, guiding responses to severe events and generating severe event/incident response reports.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Professional Engineering license in the state of Florida.
  • 7+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with Traffic Signal Operation, signal retiming and Traffic Signal Central Systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of traffic signal systems, traffic controller operation, Signal Central Systems, ITS and traffic engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal analysis programs, such as SYNCHRO, HCS, etc.
  • Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
