Position Summary

The Eastern Grains Merchant is responsible for originating and executing grain transactions across core New York and Pennsylvania markets, with a primary focus on farmer origination and truck-based logistics. This role manages an established portfolio of accounts while leveraging market insight and logistics execution to drive trading performance across the region. Success in this position requires strong commercial instincts, relationship-driven execution, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, with the opportunity to expand trading activity across broader East Coast markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Originate corn, soybean, and wheat through direct engagement with farmers across NY and PA markets

  • Execute physical grain trades and manage assigned customer accounts, balancing origination and sales activity

  • Coordinate and optimize truck-based logistics to ensure efficient and timely movement of commodities

  • Analyze local and regional market conditions to identify trading opportunities and support position development

  • Expand trading activity beyond core markets by identifying and developing opportunities across East Coast origination and distribution channels

  • Negotiate contracts covering price, volume, quality, freight, and delivery terms

  • Manage high volumes of contracts, ensuring accurate execution, follow-through, and settlement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with farmers, carriers, and counterparties to drive consistent deal flow and market expansion

  • Utilize systems, including Excel, Agris, and Lattis, to track positions, logistics, and performance

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required (or the equivalent in work experience) preferably in Agriculture, Business, Finance Economics or related major

  • 2-5 years' of experience required in commodity merchandising, originations, or trading

  • Direct experience working with farmers and managing origination contracts strongly preferred

  • Solid understanding of grain markets, supply-demand dynamics, and basic merchandising concepts (including logistics and arbitrage)

  • Experience coordinating truck logistics within agricultural supply chains

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with a commercial, sales-oriented mindset

  • Passion for agriculture and interest in developing a long-term career in grain trading on the East Coast

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
