What is a Shopify contractor?

A Shopify contractor is a professional who specializes in building, customizing, and maintaining online stores using the Shopify platform. They may work on tasks such as theme development, app integration, store setup, and troubleshooting technical issues. Shopify contractors are often hired on a project or hourly basis by businesses that need specific expertise but do not require a full-time employee. Their goal is to help clients optimize their e-commerce sites for sales, user experience, and performance. Many Shopify contractors also offer ongoing support and training for store owners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify contractor?

To thrive as a Shopify Contractor, you need expertise in e-commerce development, a strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and experience with Shopify’s platform and APIs. Familiarity with tools like Shopify Liquid, third-party app integrations, and possibly Shopify Partner or Developer certifications is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help set you apart when working with diverse clients and requirements. These skills are critical to delivering seamless, customized online stores that drive business growth and client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by Shopify contractors when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Shopify Contractors often juggle projects for several clients at once, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Each client may have different expectations, communication styles, and timelines, requiring strong organizational skills and adaptability. Additionally, staying updated with frequent Shopify platform updates and app integrations is essential to deliver high-quality solutions. Clear communication and setting realistic expectations with clients can help manage these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Shopify Contractor vs Shopify Developer?

AspectShopify ContractorShopify Developer

Work EnvironmentFreelance or contract basis, working on specific projectsCan be freelance or employed, focusing on building and customizing Shopify stores
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by small businesses, agencies, and e-commerce entrepreneursEmployed by agencies or as freelancers to develop Shopify stores

Shopify Contractors primarily focus on completing specific tasks or projects for clients, often working independently. Shopify Developers typically have more technical expertise, including coding and customization skills, and may hold certifications. Both roles are vital in the Shopify ecosystem, but Contractors usually handle project-based work, while Developers may engage in ongoing development and complex customizations.

Job description

Specialist, B2B eCommerce Marketing

Location: Los Angeles, Hybrid
Compensation: $125,000 - $145,000 annually (depending on experience)

About the Role

We are seeking a Specialist, B2B eCommerce Marketing to oversee and optimize the day-to-day digital storefront experience, catalog merchandising, and dental practitioner customer journey. You will act as the primary owner of our Shopify B2B portal. Your focus will be on driving digital user adoption, product discovery, and self-service reordering for private dental practices, dental service organizations (DSOs), and orthodontic clinics.

This is a hands-on role for someone who can combine eCommerce execution, customer experience, analytics, and lifecycle marketing. You will work cross-functionally with Global Digital Marketing, Sales, IT, Operations, and other teams to improve the digital purchasing experience and grow recurring online revenue.

Key Responsibilities

Shopify Platform Ownership & Customer Experience

• Lead daily operations of our Shopify B2B storefront, ensuring accurate clinical product merchandising, optimized search functionality, and seamless user experiences for busy dental practitioners.

• Streamline buying workflows tailored to clinical procurement, utilizing Shopify B2B features to manage custom dental practice price lists, net payment terms, quick-order lists for high-volume consumables, and simple bulk reordering processes.

• Analyze platform data and Shopify analytics to identify drop-off points in the funnel, continuously improving conversion rates and user adoption across private practices and dental accounts.

• Own merchandising, product pages, promotions, checkout conversion, and the end-to-end digital customer journey.

• Use customer behavior and analytics to improve conversion, repeat purchase, and overall customer value.

Campaign Collaboration & Digital Execution

• Collaborate with Global Digital Marketing to align platform activities with overarching digital media strategies, creating optimized Shopify landing pages, collections, and promotions to support external paid campaigns.

• Develop and deploy targeted email marketing, automated reorder reminders for dental consumables, and lifecycle nurture sequences aimed at driving recurring digital revenue from existing dental accounts.

• Coordinate catalog updates and new dental device launches on Shopify, ensuring clinical technical sheets, regulatory documentation, and instructional product videos are accessible to practitioners.

• Support SEO and SEM strategy to capture demand while continuously improving conversion through analytics and conversion rate optimization.

• Run disciplined tests across messaging, offers, audiences, landing pages, and digital experiences to improve conversion and acquisition efficiency.

Sales Integration & Compliance

• Partner with Dental Field Sales Reps to drive digital portal adoption, equipping sales teams with Shopify analytics to identify accounts that can transition to friction-free, self-service purchasing.

• Partner with Sales and commercial teams to ensure strong lead flow, follow-up, digital adoption, and conversion to revenue.

• Interface with IT and Operations to ensure smooth data flows between Shopify, inventory management systems, and backend ERP/CRM software.

• Ensure strict adherence of all digital storefront content, product claims, and clinical documentation to medical device regulatory guidelines and healthcare industry compliance.

Analytics, Testing & Optimization

• Establish clear reporting for digital adoption, acquisition, conversion, ecommerce performance, repeat purchase, retention, and ROI.

• Use data to identify where customers drop off, where to invest, what to improve, and what to test next.

• Translate insights into action and maintain clear accountability for ecommerce performance and business outcomes.

• Stay current on Shopify, CMS, ecommerce, analytics, automation, AI-enabled tools, and digital workflows that improve speed and performance.

Cross-Functional Execution & Growth

• Operate as a hands-on specialist who can personally execute across the core ecommerce and digital marketing stack.

• Work effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional partners while independently managing day-to-day priorities.

• Use SprintRay resources, contractors, freelancers, and outside partners selectively where they create real leverage.

• Help identify and scale the processes, tools, and capabilities needed as the ecommerce business grows.

Skills & Competencies

• Deep understanding of B2B ecommerce, digital merchandising, customer journeys, and conversion optimization.

• Advanced working knowledge of Shopify or Shopify Plus, including collections, B2B company profiles, product tagging, merchandising, promotions, and ecommerce analytics.

• Hands-on experience with email marketing, lifecycle marketing, marketing automation, and CRM-driven segmentation.

• Strong analytical skills with experience measuring conversion rates, customer behavior, digital adoption, attribution, and ROI.

• Strong working knowledge of SEO, paid media, landing pages, and how digital acquisition channels feed an ecommerce funnel.

• Ability to operate at both strategic and execution levels, with strong attention to detail and ownership of day-to-day platform performance.

• Comfortable working through ambiguity, solving problems directly, and moving quickly without perfect information.

• Strong cross-functional communicator who can partner effectively with Marketing, Sales, IT, Operations, and senior leadership.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience managing B2B ecommerce storefronts, online customer portals, digital commerce, or a related field.

    • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience utilizing Shopify or Shopify Plus.

    • Demonstrated success managing and optimizing ecommerce storefronts, digital customer journeys, or self-service purchasing experiences.

    • Advanced proficiency with Shopify Admin, including collections, B2B company profiles, product tagging, merchandising, and promotions.

    • Experience with web analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4 and using performance data to improve conversion and customer experience.

    • Experience with email marketing, CRM, and marketing automation platforms such as HubSpot or similar.

    • Strong fundamental understanding of SEO and paid channels and how they support an ecommerce funnel.

    • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience in dental, medical devices, orthodontics, dental supply, healthcare, or another technical product category.

    • Familiarity with the purchasing habits of private dental practices, dental service organizations (DSOs), and orthodontic clinics.

    • Hands-on Shopify B2B or Shopify Plus experience, including custom price lists, company profiles, payment terms, quick-order or bulk-reorder workflows.

    • Experience building or scaling a B2B ecommerce or direct-to-customer business.

    • Experience with HubSpot and Salesforce or similar CRM and marketing automation platforms.

    • Experience supporting the launch of a new product, category, business line, or digital storefront.

    • Experience working in a fast-moving, high-growth, entrepreneurial environment.
