The Role and Why It's Important

As a Barista at Hy-Vee, you'll be the friendly face our customers look forward to seeing every morning. In this role, you'll craft beverages, keep the coffee shop stocked and spotless, and make sure every customer walks away with exactly what they came in for, and a smile to go with it.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly, learning their names, and going the extra mile to make every visit a positive one

  • Take customer orders at the counter and over the phone, and assist with finding products and answering questions

  • Prepare and replenish coffee shop products as needed throughout your shift

  • Monitor product freshness and appearance and follow or develop a production list to stay ahead of daily needs

  • Handle food safely and keep the work area clean, neat, and up to department standards at all times

  • Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed

  • Run the department register and process payments where applicable

  • Remove trash promptly and maintain a tidy department

  • Work alongside your teammates to ensure a smooth, positive experience for every customer

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, and Coffee Shop Department Manager

Your Skills

You don't need prior experience for this role! We'll happily train and support you as you grow. To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow written and verbal instructions with confidence

  • Use basic math skills for simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording

  • Communicate clearly with customers and teammates in a friendly, helpful way

  • Stay organized and keep up with the pace of a busy coffee shop environment

  • Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted; up to six months of similar or related experience preferred

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, and Coffee Shop Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • Less than a high school diploma or equivalent experience accepted

  • Up to six months of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is performed in a store coffee shop environment with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities throughout your shift. You may encounter exposure to noise, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals or solvents, and possible electrical shock and temperature extremes. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
