Position Summary

This job description is intended to convey information important to the scope of this position and it is not intended to be an exhaustive list of skills, efforts, duties, responsibilities or working conditions associated with the position.

The Retail Lead helps support the daily operation of retail spaces by coordinating workflow, assisting with staff direction, and helping create a welcoming, organized, and guest-focused shopping experience. This position works alongside the team in active operational duties including cashiering, merchandising, stocking, product organization, and customer service while helping maintain efficient operations and a positive retail environment.

Successful employees in this role are dependable, adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable engaging with a wide variety of guests in a fast-paced and community-oriented environment. This position helps support communication, training, operational consistency, and day-to-day problem solving while assisting team members with guest interactions, product knowledge, and operational needs throughout the day. Employees in this role are expected to lead by example through professionalism, teamwork, communication, and a positive attitude while supporting a fun and welcoming retail atmosphere.


Responsibilities:

General

In addition to all responsibilities listed in the Retail Cashier Job Description, Leads must:

  • Completing sales training and the appropriate paperwork
  • Reading and being familiar with Mt. Baker General Handbook and general safety information
  • Oversee other Retail employees and inform them of daily pertinent info
  • Oversee Retail Associate clock ins and outs for accuracy. Report missed punches from employees to Supervisor daily
  • Monitor business levels and labor, send associates on breaks with clear expectations of return times.
  • Monitor sales floor for incidents of theft, report theft immediately to Security and Supervisor
  • Securely locking and unlocking the retail shop daily
  • Reliably being to work on time
  • Monitor shop inventory daily and restock as needed
  • Overseeing the counting in and closing out of tills daily
  • Collecting change funds and returning bags at the end of each shift.
  • Be available and willing to step in during difficult customer service situations
  • Uphold Mt. Baker Ski Area All Sales Final policy with customers
  • Support and Facilitate exchanges when appropriate (all sales final except as trained)

Leadership:

  • Help create and maintain a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, communication, and support to team members
  • Assist with employee onboarding, training, and ongoing development throughout the season
  • Help communicate daily priorities, workflow expectations, and shift transitions to employees
  • Lead by example through professionalism, teamwork, reliability, and work ethic
  • Help maintain department organization, safety standards, and operational consistency
  • Assist in identifying and resolving minor guest, employee, or operational concerns
  • Step into different operational roles as needed to support the team and department
  • Encourage strong communication, collaboration, accountability, and guest service within the team
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture by reinforcing safe work practices and department safety expectations
  • Help identify areas where additional operational or employee support may be needed

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to learn
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Successful completion of Mt. Baker Mountain Shop retail training by an authorized Mt. Baker Ski Area trainer
  • General familiarity with outdoor sports equipment and soft goods or demonstrate the ability to acquire a greater understanding of offerings available in the Mt. Baker Mountain Shop
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate a positive working environment for customers and other staff members of Mt. Baker Ski Area
  • Willingness to learn and improve upon skills associated with successful daily operating procedures
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including timely responses to managers and employees, and communication of personal needs.
  • Ability to multi-task in a busy environment.
  • Ability to communicate tasks and system adjustments efficiently and positively to a team.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Wage & Hour Information:

  • Starting rate begins at $18.63/hour with increases for experience, merit, tenure and future WA State minimum wage adjustments possible.
  • This is a seasonal, variable hour position. Hours per week may vary between 5-40+ hours/week. Expected end date for position is May 2, 2027, unless otherwise approved by management.

Requirements:

Physical Requirements

  • Working in the mountain environment is physically demanding. You need to be in good health and in good physical condition and have the ability to perform the following:
  • Bending, twisting, lifting, and moving items throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift and move 30 pounds (or more depending on the task).
  • Standing and or sitting for long periods.
  • Perform repetitive tasks as necessary.

Position Requirements:

  • Annual training provided by Mt. Baker Ski Area must be completed as a condition of position employment.
