Reports To: VP Of Operations / Production Manager

Location: Houston, TX

Position Summary

McDaniel Metals is seeking an experienced Shipping Manager to lead the daily operations of the Shipping & Receiving Department. This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate, timely, and efficient shipment of custom HVAC products while maintaining exceptional customer service, inventory accuracy, and operational efficiency.

The Shipping Manager will oversee shipping personnel, coordinate outbound logistics, manage freight carriers, and collaborate closely with Sales, Production, Planning, Engineering, and Customer Service to ensure customer orders are fulfilled accurately and on time. This role requires a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and is committed to continuous improvement, safety, and employee development.

Key Responsibilities

Shipping & Logistics Management

  • Plan, organize, and oversee all daily shipping and receiving activities.
  • Ensure customer orders are shipped accurately, completely, and on schedule.
  • Coordinate daily shipping priorities with Production, Planning, and Customer Service.
  • Monitor workload and allocate labor to meet production and delivery commitments.
  • Manage freight scheduling, carrier relationships, and delivery performance.
  • Ensure Bills of Lading (BOLs), packing slips, and shipping documentation are accurate and complete.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop Shipping Supervisors, Shipping Clerks, Material Handlers, and Shipping personnel.
  • Establish daily priorities and communicate performance expectations.
  • Monitor productivity, attendance, quality, and safety performance.
  • Conduct employee training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Partner with Human Resources on hiring, onboarding, employee development, and disciplinary actions.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Inventory & Material Control

  • Ensure accurate movement and tracking of finished goods and outbound materials.
  • Partner with Production and Inventory teams to resolve inventory discrepancies.
  • Maintain organization and traceability of finished products awaiting shipment.
  • Support cycle counts and inventory accuracy initiatives.

Customer Service & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Sales, Customer Service, Engineering, and Production to meet customer expectations.
  • Resolve shipping discrepancies, freight claims, damaged shipments, and customer delivery concerns.
  • Coordinate special deliveries, expedited shipments, and project-specific logistics.
  • Communicate shipping status and potential delays proactively.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce OSHA regulations and all company safety policies.
  • Ensure employees utilize required PPE and safe material handling practices.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe warehouse environment utilizing 5S principles.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, freight carrier, and company shipping procedures where applicable.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor shipping accuracy and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Develop and implement process improvements that reduce shipping errors and improve throughput.
  • Analyze shipping metrics and identify trends affecting customer service or operational performance.
  • Support company quality initiatives and maintain audit-ready documentation.

Measurable Performance Expectations

  • Achieve ≥ 99% shipping accuracy.
  • Maintain ≥ 98% on-time shipment performance.
  • Reduce shipping errors, freight claims, and damaged shipments.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy within departmental standards.
  • Achieve ≥ 90% compliance on safety and 5S audits.
  • Develop and implement at least one continuous improvement initiative each quarter.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in shipping, logistics, warehouse, or manufacturing operations.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience leading teams in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Strong understanding of shipping documentation, freight carriers, Bills of Lading, and logistics coordination.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and ERP/MRP systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within HVAC manufacturing, sheet metal fabrication, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Experience managing LTL, FTL, and parcel shipping operations.
  • Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or Continuous Improvement experience.
  • Forklift certification or experience managing material handling operations.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and warehouse environments.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and supervise production areas for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when necessary.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support production and shipping demands.
