Description
The Shipping Manager is responsible for leading all shipping and outbound logistics operations to ensure the timely, accurate, and cost-effective delivery of products to customers and end users. This role provides strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for the Shipping Department, overseeing Shipping Team Leaders, Logistics Specialists, and Shipping Operators.
The Shipping Manager collaborates cross-functionally with Production, Scheduling, Materials, and Account Management teams to align shipping activities with production schedules and customer expectations. This position drives continuous improvement, ensures safety and quality standards are met, and is accountable for overall department performance.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
  • Provide leadership, direction, and coaching to Shipping Team Leaders, Logistics Specialists, and Shipping Operators
  • Establish clear expectations and ensure accountability for performance, safety, and quality standards
  • Conduct Job Performance Evaluations (JPEs), provide feedback, and manage disciplinary or corrective actions as needed
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement

Shipping & Logistics Operations
  • Oversee daily shipping operations, including scheduling, loading, and outbound logistics coordination (domestic and international)
  • Manage relationships with carriers, freight forwarders, 3PLs, and customs brokers
  • Ensure all products are shipped accurately, on time, and in accordance with customer requirements
  • Coordinate carrier selection, delivery schedules, and shipment logistics
  • Monitor and optimize shipping processes, workflows, and dock activity to maximize efficiency and throughput
  • Ensure proper documentation, including bills of lading, packing lists, and tracking information

Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Collaborate closely with Production, Scheduling, Materials, and Account Management to align shipping priorities with production output and customer deadlines
  • Communicate shipping status, delays, and schedule changes to internal teams and stakeholders
  • Support rapid response and priority shipments to meet customer demands

Safety, Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all company, federal, and state safety regulations and policies
  • Promote and enforce Lean Manufacturing and 6-S standards within the department
  • Monitor quality standards to ensure products are shipped correctly and without damage
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment

Performance & Continuous Improvement
  • Monitor department metrics including on-time delivery, productivity, accuracy, and safety
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, and increase efficiency
  • Assist in freight optimization and cost reduction strategies
  • Help us build systems and capabilities that scale as fast as our growth
  • Lead or participate in Lean initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
  • Develop and implement process improvements to enhance operational performance

Administrative & Planning
  • Develop staffing plans and allocate resources to meet production and shipping demands
  • Assist in budgeting, cost control, and evaluation of freight and carrier programs
  • Maintain accurate records and generate reports related to shipping performance and operations
  • Participate in planning meetings and support strategic initiatives
  • Work in an extremely safe manner, following all safety rules and regulations.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, or related field preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in shipping, logistics, manufacturing, or related operations
  • 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience working with carriers, 3PLs, and international shipping operations
  • Knowledge of import/export regulations, customs compliance, and shipping documentation a plus
  • Strong knowledge of shipping processes, logistics coordination, and warehouse operations
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Superior attendance, reliability and work performance records.
  • Ability to work extra hours as the job requires.
  • Experienced with production planning software and proficient in the use of personal computers, the Internet, Word, Excel, and Outlook applications.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
