As of Jul 27, 2026, the average hourly pay for shipping containers in the United States is $19.70, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are shipping containers?

Shipping containers are large, standardized metal boxes used to transport goods over long distances, especially by sea, rail, or truck. They are designed to be durable, weatherproof, and secure, protecting cargo from damage and theft during transit. These containers come in various sizes, with the most common being 20-foot and 40-foot lengths. Their standardized design allows for easy loading, unloading, and stacking, making global trade more efficient. Shipping containers can also be repurposed for uses such as storage, offices, or even homes.

What is the difference between Shipping Containers vs Freight Coordinators?

AspectShipping ContainersFreight Coordinators
Primary RolePhysical containers used for transporting goodsPlanning and coordinating freight shipments
Work EnvironmentPorts, shipping yards, storage facilitiesOffices, logistics centers, sometimes on-site
Required CredentialsNo formal credentials needed, but knowledge of shipping standards helpsLogistics or supply chain certifications often preferred
Industry UsageShipping, freight, logisticsLogistics, supply chain management

Shipping Containers are physical units used to transport goods, while Freight Coordinators manage the planning and execution of freight shipments. Both roles are essential in logistics but serve different functions within the supply chain.

How much can you make delivering shipping containers?

Delivering shipping containers can pay between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether you work as an independent contractor or for a company. Some drivers earn additional income through overtime, bonuses, or tips, especially when handling large or specialized loads. Compensation may also include benefits if employed full-time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shipping Container Logistics Coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shipping Container Logistics Coordinator, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of supply chain management, and familiarity with international shipping regulations, often supported by a degree in logistics or related experience. Proficiency with logistics management software, tracking systems, and documentation platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient movement of goods, compliance with regulations, and smooth coordination between various stakeholders in global shipping operations.

How much do you get paid working on a container ship?

Salaries for container ship crew members vary by position and experience, but deck officers typically earn between $3,000 and $10,000 per month, while entry-level ratings may earn around $1,500 to $3,000 monthly. Crew members often work long shifts in a maritime environment and may need certifications such as STCW to qualify for certain roles.

Would you live in a $10,000 container home?

Shipping container jobs often involve working in construction, logistics, or maintenance environments, but do not typically relate to living in container homes. Living in a container home is a personal choice that depends on factors like design, safety, and local regulations, rather than job roles. If considering such a lifestyle, it is important to evaluate building codes and insulation requirements for safety and comfort.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in shipping container logistics, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in shipping container logistics often encounter challenges such as coordinating complex schedules, managing unexpected delays (like weather or customs issues), and ensuring containers are loaded efficiently to maximize space and safety. Effective communication with shipping agents, port officials, and warehouse teams is crucial to quickly resolve issues and minimize disruptions. Staying organized and adopting digital tracking tools can help streamline operations and improve overall efficiency in this fast-paced environment.

Is it hard to get a job on a container ship?

Getting a job on a container ship can be competitive and often requires relevant certifications such as STCW and experience in maritime operations. Entry-level positions may be available for those with basic safety training, but higher roles typically demand specialized skills and prior maritime work experience.
