Shipboard Firefighter Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Salary Range: $27.99-34.82 (Wage Determination =$5.55 health and welfare stipend)   

Position FT/PT: Full Time

Role and Responsibilities:

AdvantEdge Technology, Inc. is seeking a motivated and experienced Damage Control Technician to 

support operations aboard the Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS), operating out of Port Hueneme, 

California. This position supports shipboard Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) systems 

maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and underway mission operations.

Primary Duties Include:

The Damage Control Technician will perform duties including, but not limited to:

•  Inspect, operate, maintain, test, and repair shipboard damage control and firefighting equipment.

•  Perform preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with established maintenance procedures and shipboard        requirements.

•  Inspect and maintain portable fire extinguishers and other emergency response equipment.

•  Support inspection, testing, and maintenance of installed firefighting and suppression systems.

•  Support operation and maintenance of shipboard drainage, dewatering, and flooding-control equipment.

•  Operate and maintain portable and installed dewatering equipment, reductors, pumps, hoses, and associated equipment.

•  Inspect and maintain damage control equipment including pipe patching, shoring, plugging, and emergency repair equipment.

•  Maintain Damage Control Repair Lockers and emergency response equipment in a ready-for-use condition.

•  Conduct routine inspections of shipboard spaces for fire, flooding, safety, and damage control discrepancies.

•  Assist with maintenance and operation of shipboard valves, piping systems, and associated mechanical equipment.

•  Support preservation work including surface preparation, corrosion control, painting, and general compartment maintenance.

•  Participate in shipboard tag-out procedures and comply with established Navy and company safety requirements.

•  Assist with equipment removal, installation, overhaul, and restoration during maintenance availabilities.

•  Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection documentation, logs, and equipment inventories.

•  Participate in shipboard damage control training and drills involving fire, flooding, toxic gas, personnel casualties, and other emergency scenarios.

•  Serve as a member of the ship's emergency response organization as assigned.

•  Perform duties as Investigator, Boundary man, Hose Team Member, Nozzleman, Plugging/Patching Team Member, or other damage control assignments as required.

•  Stand engineering, sounding and security, or other shipboard watches assigned while underway.

•  Respond to actual shipboard casualties and emergencies as directed.

•  Maintain assigned workspaces, shops, tools, equipment, and storage areas in a clean and safe condition.

•  Participate in pre-underway preparations and post-underway restoration.

•  Perform line handling and other seamanship duties as required.

•  Perform additional shipboard duties as directed by the Damage Control Assistant, Marine Manager, or other designated supervisor.

Position Qualifications:

•High school diploma or GED required.

•Minimum of five (5) years of relevant U.S. Navy or U.S. Coast Guard experience in Damage Control, Hull Maintenance, shipboard firefighting, or a directly related shipboard engineering field.

•Working knowledge of shipboard Damage Control organization, firefighting, flooding control, emergency response, and casualty-control procedures.

•Demonstrated experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance on shipboard equipment and systems.

•Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, maintenance procedures, equipment documentation, 

diagrams, drawings, and shipboard system information.

•Knowledge of shipboard safety practices, work-control procedures, and tag-out requirements.

•Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a shipboard maintenance and operations team.

•Must be willing and able to get underway aboard the Self Defense Test Ship for scheduled operations 

and remain aboard for the duration of assigned underway periods.

•Must be able to stand assigned engineering and shipboard watches while underway.

•Must successfully complete required shipboard firefighting and emergency-response training provided or coordinated by AdvantEdge Technology.

•Must be able to pass applicable background requirements and obtain and maintain a DBIDS credential for access to

Naval Base Ventura County.

•Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

•Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) 

and U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate as required for assigned shipboard duties.

•Must maintain all company, government, and maritime qualifications required for the position.

Preferred Skills:

•Prior experience aboard U.S. Navy surface ships or commercial vessels.

•Knowledge of shipboard propulsion and auxiliary systems.

•Familiarity with shipboard maintenance practices and engineering operations.

•Welding, pipefitting, or fabrication experience is a plus.

•Understanding of shipboard safety programs and lockout/tagout procedures.

•Five or more years of experience as a Navy or Coast Guard Damage Controlman or Hull Maintenance 

Technician aboard surface ships or cutters.

•Navy 3-M / Planned Maintenance System (PMS) experience, including maintenance documentation and 

corrective maintenance tracking Using SKED and CSMP maintenance systems.

•Experience with shipboard AFFF systems, fire main systems, fixed CO2/Halon 1301 suppression systems, portable

firefighting equipment, SCBAs, and emergency breathing equipment.

• Experience with shipboard drainage, dewatering, reductors, portable pumps, pipe patching, plugging, and shoring.

• Knowledge of watertight integrity, material-condition inspections, and Damage Control closure requirements.

•Experience with Gas Free Engineering, gas detection equipment, confined-space entry, and hot-work safety requirements.

•Previous qualification or experience as Repair Locker Leader, Scene Leader, Investigator, Boundary man,

Nozzleman, Damage Control Central Watch stander, or Damage Control Training Team (DCTT) member.

• Advanced Shipboard Firefighting or equivalent military/maritime firefighting training.

• Experience conducting Damage Control drills and providing hands-on training to shipboard personnel.

• Mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting valves, piping, pumps, firefighting equipment, and other shipboard mechanical systems.

• Current TWIC, MMC, U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate, and applicable STCW endorsements are highly desirable.

• Ability to communicate effectively with civilian mariners, Navy personnel, government representatives, engineers,

technicians, and shipboard leadership.

Physical Requirements:

•Must be physically capable of working aboard an operating former U.S. Navy vessel in both in-port and underway environments.

• Must be able to climb and descend steep shipboard vertical ladder wells repeatedly throughout the workday.

•Must be able to work in confined spaces and hot engine room environments.

•Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.

•Must be able to stand prolonged engine room and shipboard watches while underway.

•Must be able to wear required PPE, respirators, and firefighting equipment.

•Must be able to pass Shipboard Fire Party School.

•Must be able to get underway in support of mission operations.

•Must be capable of handling firefighting hoses, Damage Control equipment, portable pumps, tools, and other shipboard     equipment.

•Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and, when medically qualified, 

shipboard firefighting protective equipment and breathing apparatus.

•  Must be capable of working in machinery spaces and other environments involving heat, noise, vibration, wet surfaces,     weather exposure, and normal shipboard industrial conditions.

•  Must be able to perform assigned duties aboard the vessel while underway, including extended work periods and shipboard  watch standing.

•  Must be able to safely participate in Damage Control drills, shipboard firefighting training, emergency-response evolutions, and actual casualty response.

•  Must be capable of performing line handling and other general shipboard duties when required.
