As of Sep 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for shear press brake in the United States is $20.51, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.55 and $22.84 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a shear press brake operator?

A Shear Press Brake operator is a skilled worker who operates machinery used to cut, bend, and shape metal sheets. The 'shear' part of the job refers to cutting metal sheets to size, while the 'press brake' is used to bend or form the metal into specific angles or shapes. Operators must read blueprints, set up machines, and ensure quality control during the fabrication process. This role is essential in manufacturing industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shear press brake operator?

To thrive as a Shear Press Brake Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, experience with metal fabrication, and a solid understanding of blueprint reading and shop math, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with CNC press brake machines, sheet metal shears, calipers, and safety protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure precise metal forming, safe operations, and consistent production quality in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by shear press brake operators and how can they be overcome?

Shear Press Brake operators often face challenges such as ensuring precise bends, maintaining consistent quality, and handling heavy materials safely. To overcome these, operators should regularly inspect and calibrate their machines, follow established safety protocols, and communicate closely with team members to ensure correct job specifications. Continuous learning about new tooling and updated machine features can also help improve efficiency and reduce errors on the shop floor.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Press Brake Operator with strong CNC programming and setup experience, preferably on Dellum control systems. This role requires a skilled fabrication professional who can independently program, troubleshoot, calibrate, and optimize press brake production while serving as a technical resource for the team.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience operating both a CNC Press Brake and Shear, making real-time machine adjustments, and producing high-quality metal components with minimal waste.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up, program, and operate KAAST CNC Press Brake equipment.
  • Operate CNC shear equipment to cut material to specifications prior to forming operations.
  • Program machines directly from the control interface using Delem or Dellum controllers.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, work orders, and specifications.
  • Determine proper tooling, bend sequences, material allowances, and machine settings.
  • Input parameters including material type, thickness, dimensions, bend angles, and leg sizes.
  • Troubleshoot machine, tooling, and quality issues during production.
  • Adjust machine calibration, crowning, and deflection settings to ensure precision bends and dimensional accuracy.
  • Make on-the-floor programming modifications without relying on office-generated programs.
  • Inspect finished parts to verify compliance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and equipment checks.
  • Safely handle and move materials throughout the fabrication process.
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and production leadership to ensure production accuracy and efficiency.
  • Help establish best practices, quality standards, and process improvements.
  • Mentor and train less experienced operators while serving as a subject matter expert on press brake operations.
Qualifications Required
  • 3+ years of CNC Press Brake setup, programming, and operation experience.
  • Experience programming directly at the machine controller.
  • Experience with Delem, Delem 51T, or Dellum controllers strongly preferred.
  • Experience operating both CNC press brakes and shears.
  • Strong understanding of tooling selection, bend calculations, and fabrication processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot production issues and make machine adjustments independently.
  • Knowledge of machine calibration, crowning, and deflection compensation.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings.
  • Strong fabrication math and measurement skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Preferred
  • Experience with KAAST equipment.
  • Experience working with aluminum, sheet metal, or architectural metals.
  • CNC programming background.
  • Lean manufacturing or process improvement experience.
  • Forklift experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift and move materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment that may be hot, cold, noisy, or dusty.
  • Ability to safely guide and handle large sheet metal components during fabrication.
What Success Looks Like
  • Independently operates and programs both the CNC shear and press brake.
  • Produces accurate, high-quality fabricated parts with minimal scrap.
  • Quickly diagnoses and resolves machine and quality issues.
  • Serves as the team's technical expert for Delem-controlled brake systems.
  • Improves overall quality, efficiency, and fabrication processes.
  • Successfully mentors and develops the skill level of fellow operators.
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • 90-day performance review with opportunity for increase.
