What is a Shaler job?

A Shaler is typically a construction or paving worker responsible for applying, spreading, and smoothing asphalt or other surface materials. They ensure that roads, driveways, or other surfaces are properly sealed and compacted for durability and safety. This job often involves using hand tools, machinery, and working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions. It requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and knowledge of paving techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Shaler position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shaler, you need strong physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and efficiently with paving materials, usually gained through on-the-job experience or apprenticeship in road construction or asphalt paving. Proficiency with paving equipment such as asphalt rollers, shovels, rakes, and sometimes small machinery is necessary, along with familiarity with site safety protocols. Teamwork, communication, and reliability are crucial soft skills that help maintain workflow and safety on a construction site. These abilities ensure that projects are completed to high-quality standards, on time, and with minimal safety incidents.

What is a typical work environment and daily routine like for a Shaler?

Shalers typically work outdoors as part of a paving or road construction crew, often in varying weather conditions and sometimes during nights or weekends to minimize public disruption. A typical day involves preparing work sites, spreading and smoothing asphalt, operating tools or small machinery, and coordinating closely with other team members to ensure even, durable surfacing. The job can be physically demanding, requiring frequent bending and lifting, but safety protocols and teamwork help manage potential risks. Shalers also perform maintenance checks on their equipment and help ensure compliance with environmental and site safety standards throughout the project.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
