Job description

Frontier Behavioral Health's presence in Spokane is more than 100 years strong, allowing our non-profit organization to understand the varied needs of our clients and the larger community. Our programs are designed to provide evidence-based treatment to adults, youth and seniors who are dealing with a wide range of behavioral health issues. As a Trauma-Informed Care Organization, we firmly believe in recovery and that our clients can lead fulfilling and meaningful lives, and we consider it an honor and a privilege to assist them in their journey. If you want to have a positive impact in the lives of others come join us!
WHY CHOOSE FRONTIER BEHAVIORAL HEALTH?
  • At Frontier Behavioral Health, we value our employees and recognize the importance of EVERY employee's contribution to our mission.
  • Our behavioral health services make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve and contribute to the health, safety, and quality of life for everyone in Spokane County.
  • At FBH we have a variety of client services, including outpatient, inpatient, community outreach, crisis services, partnerships with schools, law enforcement and more.
  • Our evidence-based, culturally appropriate, trauma informed behavioral health services address the diverse needs of those we serve.

FBH offers an internship for students enrolled in bachelor's degree majors such as psychology, health psychology, applied developmental psychology. This is often an undergraduate's first experience in a professional setting, so the internship is focused around three core elements: an introduction to FBH and community mental health as a setting for the practice if psychology and counseling; activities that help students learn the application of their coursework in a practice setting; and exploration of the student's professional goals and aspirations. An intern is assigned to an FBH program that matches their interest (e.g., child counseling, adult counseling, crisis work, etc) but all interns also get exposure to the breadth and depth of community behavioral health through shadowing in other programs. Internships typically run 90 to 120 hours per academic quarter, with some interns enrolling for two quarters. The FBH Intern Instructor (a licensed independent clinical social worker with training and experience in instruction) oversees the program and offers collaborative seminars weekly for all interns to enhance professional development. Many, but not all, Bachelor's interns are enrolled in EWU's Behavioral Health Support Specialist certificate program.
During this Internship, you may do the following:
  • Shadowing clinician in individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Individual supervision weekly with an intern supervisor in the intern's FBH program.
  • Collaborative seminars each week.
  • Ability to participate in counseling sessions, e.g., by administering assessment instruments, providing a client with resources, using interventions under the guidance of the clinician.
  • Shadowing staff in programs other than the one to which the intern is assigned.
  • Reflection on the experience as a first step in professional growth and career development.

Requirements for internship applicants:
  • Simultaneous enrollment in an undergraduate program with an internship program such as Psychology, Health Psychology and Applied Development Psychology.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Attendance at in-person orientation.
