Sewing Associate information

What is a sewing associate?

Sewing Associates are skilled workers responsible for operating sewing machines and assembling garments, textiles, or other fabric-based products. They follow patterns, measure materials, and ensure precise stitching to maintain quality standards. Sewing Associates may also inspect finished products for defects and make necessary adjustments or repairs. Their role is essential in industries like apparel manufacturing, upholstery, and home textiles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sewing associate?

To thrive as a Sewing Associate, you need proficiency in sewing techniques, garment construction, fabric handling, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial sewing machines, sergers, and quality control systems is important, and some positions may require knowledge of pattern reading. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and good time management are soft skills that help you excel in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality products efficiently and meeting production standards.

How does a sewing associate typically collaborate with other team members in a production environment?

Sewing Associates often work closely with quality control inspectors, pattern makers, and production supervisors to ensure that garments or textile products meet company standards. Collaboration usually involves communicating about fabric issues, interpreting work orders, and adjusting techniques based on team feedback. Regular meetings or huddles may be held to discuss production targets and troubleshoot any workflow challenges. This team-oriented environment helps maintain efficiency and high product quality.

What is the difference between Sewing Associate vs Sewing Machine Operator?

While both roles involve sewing tasks in manufacturing settings, Sewing Associates typically assist with sewing-related duties and quality checks, whereas Sewing Machine Operators focus on operating and maintaining sewing machines. The roles often overlap in work environment and required skills, but the Machine Operator role emphasizes technical machine operation, making it more specialized.

Job description

Sewing Associate – Flag Repair & Fabric Work
Flagpoles Etc. is looking for a dependable, detail-oriented person to help with flag repair, sewing, and fabric-related work at our Wixom, Michigan location.
To Apply
Please submit a short description of your sewing experience to logistics@flagpolesetc.com
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working independently, takes pride in neat work, and understands that details matter. You do not need to know everything about flags — we can teach that — but you do need to be comfortable using a sewing machine and working with fabric.
What You’ll Be Doing
Responsibilities may include:
  •  Repairing American flags, state flags, custom flags, and specialty flags
  •  Sewing hems, fly ends, headers, patches, and reinforcements
  •  Replacing or repairing grommets, rope, snaps, and other flag hardware
  •  Inspecting flags to determine whether they can be repaired
  •  Measuring, cutting, folding, and preparing fabric
  •  Keeping sewing work clean, accurate, and professional
  •  Following written instructions and job notes
  •  Helping keep the sewing area organized and stocked
  •  Communicating when materials, thread, hardware, or supplies are low
  •  Making sure finished repairs are neat, strong, and ready to return to the customer
  • For full-time work, the remaining time would be spent helping in our inventory room.
What We’re Looking For
The right person will be:
  •  Experienced with a sewing machine
  •  Comfortable working with large pieces of fabric
  •  Detail-oriented and patient
  •  Dependable and able to work without constant supervision
  •  Able to follow instructions carefully
  •  Honest about mistakes and willing to learn
  •  Comfortable standing, bending, folding, and handling flags
  •  Respectful of American flags and other customer-owned items
  •  Physical Requirements
    This position may require:
    •  Standing or sitting for extended periods
    •  Handling large flags and fabric
    •  Lifting and moving materials as needed
    •  Repetitive hand and arm movement
    •  Good eyesight for stitching, measuring, and quality check
About Us
Flagpoles Etc. has been serving customers since 1991. We sell, service, install, and repair flagpoles and flags for homeowners, businesses, municipalities, schools, and organizations across the country. We take pride in quality work, American-made products, and treating customer property with care.
