Position Summary:
The Food Skills Trainer will facilitate training using a structured curriculum for food preparation and food service skills while providing instruction, supervision, and coaching to trainees in GCI's (Goodwill of Central Iowa's) food skills training program. Plans and monitors activities and schedules of trainees to achieve goals of the skills curriculum.
Essential Functions:
  • Facilitates training through classroom and hands-on methods using organizational values of love, kindness, and respect.
  • Assists in creating and planning training curriculum that supports trainee goal achievement in an identified set of skills.
  • Provides training to participants using ServSafe criteria and methods to be able to earn a certification.
  • Provides feedback to trainees through verbal and written coaching and encouragement while tracking learning and goal progress.
  • Coordinates supply inventory necessary for use during training facilitation for each cohort.
  • Documents trainee learning, progress, certifications, and schedules according to program and funder guidelines.
  • Leverages facility equipment, resources, and technology to deliver training and instruction consistently and safely.
  • Maintains flexibility in training style to meet the needs of trainees to assist in coaching to increase independence and problem-solving skills.
  • Creates and submits training documentation according to organization and funder guidelines.
  • Collaborates with peers and departments to plan and facilitate training, equipment use, and scheduling.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in human services or related field with professional training and/or experience in the functional skills area.
  • One year of food preparation, food service management, or related experience required. Experience coaching/teaching others; experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
  • ServSafe Certification preferred; GCI will provide this training and certification; also ServSafe Instructor/Proctor training and certification must be able to be obtained.
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with trainees of all ability levels, and with team members and the public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Must be able to perform basic math.
  • Access to reliable transportation for regular participation in work.
  • Possession of valid Iowa Driver's License, a good driving record, insurable, and able to provide proof of personal vehicle insurance with a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident auto insurance liability coverage.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and dependent adult and child abuse background check.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Supervisory, coaching, or teaching experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to remain seated periodically.
  • Must be able to operate or use food service equipment such as stove, microwave, knives, dishwasher, and related kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to remain physically active for extended periods of time and navigate throughout our facilities.
  • Ability to regularly carry, lift, push, or pull up to 20 lbs regularly.
  • Ability to regularly carry, lift, push, or pull up to 40 lbs occasionally.
