What is a service manager?

Service manager is a broad title given to positions throughout a wide variety of industries. As it is an umbrella term, responsibilities vary significantly from job to job. However, in all service manager positions, your duties revolve around ensuring that the services your company offers are running smoothly. This means coordinating with a team of service workers to ensure that their work meets the standards set by the company and the industry. In industries like healthcare, this may require more than basic customer service, as your team must also meet government regulations. Management positions may require overtime, especially in shift work industries, as you are responsible for the performance of the entire department, not just a particular shift. Necessary skills and qualifications vary by job. However, all service managers must be organized, able to delegate when needed, and have excellent communication skills.

What does a service manager do?

A Service Manager oversees the delivery of customer service within an organization, ensuring that client needs are met efficiently and effectively. They manage service teams, coordinate maintenance or repair schedules, handle customer inquiries or complaints, and work to improve overall service quality. Service Managers also analyze service processes, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with company policies and standards. Their goal is to enhance customer satisfaction and support the business’s operational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in operations management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems, service management software, and process improvement methodologies like Six Sigma is often required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you effectively lead teams and resolve client issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service delivery, and achieving operational goals.

How does a service manager typically collaborate with other departments to improve customer satisfaction?

Service Managers work closely with departments such as sales, operations, and technical support to ensure a seamless customer experience. They often coordinate with sales teams to understand customer expectations, communicate with technical staff to resolve complex service issues, and provide feedback to product teams for service improvements. Regular interdepartmental meetings and transparent communication are key to identifying and addressing customer pain points, ultimately enhancing overall satisfaction.

Job description

Lead Great Service. Create Great Experiences.

At Chuck-A-Rama, great food is only part of what keeps guests coming back. Our Service Managers lead the Front of House team and help make sure every guest feels welcomed, cared for, and glad they chose to dine with us. As a Service Manager, you'll take the lead on the guest experience from the moment guests walk through the door until they leave. You'll coach and develop our Front of House Team Members, oversee daily service, solve problems, and work alongside your team to keep the dining room running smoothly.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who genuinely enjoys people. You'll spend your time leading from the floor, supporting your team, connecting with guests, and making sure the service we provide lives up to the food we're proud to serve.

What You'll Do

As a Service Manager, you'll help lead Front of House operations, including:

  • Leading, coaching, and supporting Front of House Team Members
  • Creating a friendly, positive, and welcoming environment for guests and team members
  • Being visible and engaged on the restaurant floor throughout your shift
  • Training team members on service standards, procedures, and guest care
  • Setting clear expectations and providing ongoing feedback and coaching
  • Overseeing daily Front of House operations and shift execution
  • Making sure guests are greeted, tables are cared for, and service stays attentive throughout the meal
  • Supporting register operations and ensuring accurate cash-handling procedures
  • Responding to guest questions, feedback, and concerns with professionalism and care
  • Resolving problems quickly and finding solutions that create a positive guest experience
  • Coordinating with the kitchen and management team to keep service running smoothly
  • Helping create schedules and ensuring appropriate staffing for each shift
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization throughout the dining room, entrance, restrooms, and other guest areas
  • Ensuring Front of House food safety, sanitation, and company procedures are followed
  • Monitoring Front of House supplies and communicating ordering needs
  • Identifying opportunities to improve service, efficiency, and the overall guest experience
  • Stepping into Front of House positions when needed during busy periods

What We're Looking For

Great Service Managers know how to lead a team while never losing sight of the guest. We're looking for a leader who:

  • Has a high school diploma or GED
  • Has restaurant management, hospitality leadership, or comparable supervisory experience
  • Genuinely enjoys working with people and creating great guest experiences
  • Leads by example and is comfortable working alongside the team
  • Can coach, motivate, and develop team members
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Remains calm and solution-focused when challenges arise
  • Can multitask and make good decisions in a busy restaurant environment
  • Has strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Understands restaurant service and Front of House operations
  • Is comfortable learning and using POS, scheduling, and restaurant systems
  • Holds themselves and their team accountable to high standards
  • Works well with both Front and Back of House teams
  • Is available to work a flexible restaurant schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Back of House experience is a plus, but a strong understanding of hospitality, leadership, and guest service is what matters most.

Why You'll Love Leading at Chuck-A-Rama

Great restaurants need great leaders, and we believe in rewarding the people who help our restaurants and teams succeed.

Benefits and perks include:

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Monthly performance-based bonus opportunity
  • Generous paid time off
  • Low-cost health insurance
  • 401(k) with company match for eligible employees
  • Employee dining discounts
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • A supportive, team-oriented work environment
  • No super-late restaurant nights

What Success Looks Like

  • A successful Chuck-A-Rama Service Manager creates a Front of House team that's friendly, confident, and ready to take great care of our guests.
  • Your team knows what's expected, receives the coaching they need to succeed, and works together when the restaurant gets busy.
  • The dining room is clean and welcoming, service is attentive, and guest concerns are handled quickly and thoughtfully.
  • Most importantly, you're present. You know what's happening on the floor, you know your team, and you're there when they need you.
  • When guests leave feeling like they were genuinely taken care of, you've done your job well.

Come Lead With Us

For over 60 years, Chuck-A-Rama has been a place where families gather around the table. Our Service Managers help make sure every one of those families receives the friendly, welcoming experience that's been part of our tradition since 1966.
