What is a server test technician?

Server Test Technicians are professionals responsible for testing, diagnosing, and ensuring the proper functioning of server hardware and related systems. They work with servers during the manufacturing or maintenance process to identify and resolve hardware or software issues before deployment. Their duties often include installing operating systems, running diagnostic programs, documenting test results, and troubleshooting any problems encountered. Server Test Technicians play a critical role in maintaining the reliability and performance of servers used in data centers and enterprise environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server test technician?

To thrive as a Server Test Technician, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, server architectures, and troubleshooting, often supported by an associate degree in electronics or IT-related certifications. Familiarity with diagnostic software, server management tools, and operating systems like Linux or Windows Server is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in this role. These competencies are crucial to ensure that servers are thoroughly tested, reliable, and ready for deployment in demanding data center environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by server test technicians in a fast-paced data center environment?

Server Test Technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting hardware failures under tight deadlines, adapting to rapidly evolving server technologies, and managing multiple testing projects simultaneously. Working in a fast-paced data center requires strong problem-solving skills and clear communication with engineering, IT, and quality assurance teams to quickly identify and resolve issues. Staying organized and continuously updating technical knowledge are essential for success in this dynamic environment.

Who we are:
At Safran Trusted 4D Inc., we're the world leader in Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (R-PNT) technology that's used in almost every device, vehicle, utility grid, and cell phone tower that we see today. We provide virtually fail-safe GNSS and PNT solutions for defense and commercial applications worldwide. Simply put, we do work that matters, powering the systems people depend on every day.
Locally, we manufacture precise synchronization clocks for data centers called time servers, as well as GNSS simulators to help test PNT equipment before it launches - such as rockets or sports watches! Our products are used by some of the leading data center providers and space agencies in the world.
We are located in West Henrietta, New York, with an on-site manufacturing facility and teams in engineering, R&D, sales and marketing, and more.

You'll troubleshoot issues involving PCBA assemblies, test setups, and related components, while accurately documenting non-conformances and test results.
As a key member of our Production team, you'll work cross-functionally with Production Engineering and Quality to identify defects, recreate failures, and support root-cause analysis-helping ensure every product meets our high standards for quality and performance.
The Day to Day:
  • Test and inspect all product families to verify proper functionality under real-world use-case conditions
  • Perform detailed visual and mechanical inspections to identify defects and ensure workmanship meets quality standards
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical and electrical assembly processes to identify defects in workmanship and/or product performance
  • Work cross-functionally with Production Engineering and Quality to clarify defects, recreate failures, and support root-cause diagnosis
  • Use sophisticated electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, power meters, and related tools, to collect and evaluate operating data and verify successful unit performance
  • Document test results, failures, and non-conformances clearly and accurately

What you Bring to Safran:

  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for quality
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 certifications or experience preferred
  • Ability to safely lift products weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong working knowledge of power meters, spectrum analyzers, digital oscilloscopes, and other electronic test equipment
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple testing activities in a fast-paced production environment

Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Paid Time Off
  • $25-$30/hour plus annual bonus opportunity
