Server Storage Engineer information

What is a server storage engineer?

Server Storage Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, configuring, managing, and maintaining data storage solutions within server environments. They ensure that servers have reliable, scalable, and secure storage systems to support business operations. Their responsibilities often include overseeing storage area networks (SANs), network-attached storage (NAS), data backup, disaster recovery, and optimizing storage performance. Server Storage Engineers work closely with other IT teams to implement storage best practices and troubleshoot any storage-related issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server storage engineer?

To thrive as a Server Storage Engineer, you need expertise in server hardware, storage systems, networking fundamentals, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise storage solutions (such as SAN, NAS), virtualization platforms, backup software, and certifications like CompTIA Server+, VMware, or Cisco are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this position. These skills and qualities ensure reliable data management, optimized infrastructure performance, and efficient collaboration with IT teams.

What are some common challenges faced by server storage engineers in managing large-scale data environments?

Server Storage Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data integrity, optimizing storage performance, and managing backups in environments with rapidly growing data volumes. Balancing the need for high availability and scalability while controlling costs can be complex, especially when supporting mission-critical applications. Additionally, staying updated with evolving technologies and best practices for security and disaster recovery is essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Server Storage Engineer vs Network Storage Engineer?

Liberty Center One (LCO) is seeking a versatile Cloud Network & Systems Engineer to join our fast-paced, customer-focused team. This hybrid role blends advanced network engineering with systems administration, making it ideal for a technologist who thrives on variety and enjoys working across multiple layers of cloud infrastructure. You’ll design, implement, and support secure, scalable networks while also managing cloud and server systems that power client environments.

We envision effective and reliable IT for all
  • Architect, deploy, and maintain datacenter and cloud network infrastructure (LAN/WAN, VPNs, SD-WAN, firewalls, load balancers).
  • Configure and troubleshoot Cisco/Juniper/Fortinet appliances; manage BGP, OSPF, VLANs, MPLS, and VPN tunnels.
  • Implement security best practices (IDS/IPS, segmentation, Zero Trust principles).
  • Monitor and optimize network performance; respond to alerts and resolve escalated issues.
Systems Administration
  • Manage and support Linux and Windows servers (Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, file/print, IIS, Apache, MySQL/MSSQL).
  • Assist with administration of our Openstack (KVM) cloud platform.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting for hosting environments including virtual apps & desktops, web, file and database servers.
  • Automate tasks using scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python, or Ansible).
  • Support and maintain datacenter hardware including servers, storage, and backup appliances.
  • Lead or contribute to IT projects including infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and new service rollouts.
  • Document solutions, share knowledge, and train colleagues on engineering standards.
  • Engage directly with clients to deliver superior service and consulting.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years in IT roles with both networking and systems administration responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing protocols, switching, and firewalls.
  • Proficiency with Linux and Windows Server administration, Active Directory, and core services (DNS, DHCP, SMTP).
  • Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere, Hyper‑V, or KVM).
  • Hands‑on with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or private cloud) a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently on complex issues.
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT/Computer Science or equivalent experience.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with monitoring and SIEM tools (CheckMk, Wazuh, Splunk, Prometheus, etc.)
  • Knowledge of storage systems and backup technologies (Pure, Veeam, etc.).
  • Experience with software‑defined networking (SDN)
  • Experience working with ticketing system for IT service management and documentation
Why Join LCO?

  • We believe that everyone should have a voice and a seat at the table. Your ideas are welcome here.
  • We operate in a team environment, while also demonstrating the ability to take initiative on your own and be a self‑starter.
  • We believe that a strong work ethic, a drive for continuous improvement, and the ability to share a good laugh each day with your co‑workers are key ingredients for a successful team.
  • Royal Oak, MI / Cincinnati, OH (On‑site with some flexibility)
  • Liberty Center One – A leading regional cloud infrastructure and datacenter services provider, named to the Inc. 5000 list three consecutive years.
