What are the primary responsibilities of a server, bartender, or waitress?

Servers, bartenders, and waitresses are responsible for providing excellent customer service in restaurants, bars, or other dining establishments. Their duties typically include taking food and drink orders, serving meals and beverages, answering menu questions, and ensuring guests have a positive dining experience. Bartenders also prepare and serve drinks, maintain bar cleanliness, and handle cash or credit transactions. All roles require strong communication, multitasking skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server, bartender, or waitress?

To excel as a Server, Bartender, or Waitress, you need strong customer service skills, multitasking abilities, and a basic understanding of food safety, often supported by a food handler’s or responsible beverage service certification. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, drink-mixing tools, and order management software is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this fast-paced environment. These competencies ensure efficient service, customer satisfaction, and smooth restaurant operations.

How do server, bartender, or waitress typically manage busy shifts and prioritize tasks effectively?

During busy shifts, Server Bartender Waitresses often use strong organizational skills and clear communication to manage multiple responsibilities, such as taking orders, preparing drinks, serving food, and handling payments. Teamwork is essential—they coordinate closely with kitchen and bar staff to ensure timely service. Prioritizing tasks, staying calm under pressure, and keeping a positive attitude help maintain excellent customer experiences, even during peak hours. Many establishments also provide training and support to help staff develop these multitasking skills.

While Server Bartender Waitresses focus on serving food and drinks directly to customers, Barbacks support bartenders by restocking supplies and maintaining the bar area. Both roles are essential in hospitality settings, but Server Bartender Waitresses have more direct customer interaction and responsibilities related to service, whereas Barbacks primarily handle behind-the-scenes support tasks.

Who makes more money, a server or a bartender?

In general, bartenders tend to earn more than servers because they often receive higher base wages and rely heavily on tips, especially in busy establishments. Both roles can vary in income based on location, experience, and the establishment's tipping culture, but bartenders typically have higher earning potential due to their specialized skills and the nature of their work environment.

Much of Well Dunn's staff are students or business professionals who work--or go to school--during the day. Most of our events are evening and weekends, after the typical workday schedule is complete, but we do look for people who have flexible schedules.
In becoming a member of our event staff, we look for folks who possess the following characteristics:

If you are looking for a flexible part-time job to supplement your income, Well Dunn could be the place for you! Do you have experience in the hospitality industry? We'd love to talk to you! No experience in hospitality, but a willingness to learn, adapt, and work hard? We'd love to talk to you, as well!
You are expected to be able to carry 40lbs and move/setup heavy equipment.
Bartender and Server pay rates begin at $23 per hour, and we can offer more based on experience. Please attach a resume in your email that details your work experience and history.
