Job description

Working Location: MASSACHUSETTS, WESTBOROUGH; MASSACHUSETTS, LITTLETON; MASSACHUSETTS, WALTHAM; Massachusetts, Boston
Are you looking for a company that cares about people's lives and health, including yours? At EVIDENT, we help make people's lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling, every day.
Let's inspire healthier lives, together.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Sr Applications Engineering leads the Applications Engineering function within the Digital Pathology vertical at Evident Scientific. This is a senior player-coach role responsible for building, working and scaling a team of Applications Engineers - while remaining directly hands-on with the most complex customer engagements, strategic evaluations, and commercial opportunities.
Thhis candidate owns the end-to-end customer technical journey: from pre-sale demonstration and evaluation design through deployment, workflow integration, training, and long-term adoption. The role bridges Sales, Product, Engineering, and Operations - translating customer workflow requirements into product feedback and translating product capability into field-deployable solutions. You will be a senior technical voice of the customer inside Evident Digital Pathology and the senior technical face of Evident to strategic customers and partners.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership & Function Building
  • Manage, develop, and coach a team of Applications Engineers across North America.
  • Build a culture of customer obsession, technical excellence, and continuous improvement across the team.
  • Establish and maintain onboarding programmes, technical competency frameworks, and ongoing capability development.
  • Provide coaching and escalation support on complex deployments, difficult customer situations, and high-stakes evaluations.

2. Strategic Customer Engagement & Commercial Support
  • Lead or co-lead technical engagement on Evident's most strategic customer accounts - including RFI/RFP, tender management, flagship evaluations, large fleet deployments, and reference site development.
  • Partner with Sales leadership on enterprise account strategies, RFP responses, competitive evaluations, and multi-site deployment proposals.
  • Own the technical relationship with key strategic customers and partners, including IMS partners (e.g. Proscia, Techcyte) and CRO/pharma tox accounts.
  • Design and execute workflow pilots, proof-of-concept evaluations, and clinical validation programmes at reference sites.
  • Represent Evident at key industry conferences, congresses, and customer-facing events as a senior technical authority.

3. Cross-Functional Leadership & Product Influence
  • Serve as the primary voice of the field and the customer to Product Management and Engineering - synthesising field feedback into actionable product requirements.
  • Establish a structured requirements feedback loop: collecting, prioritising, and communicating field-derived workflow gaps, integration limitations, and customer feature requests.
  • Collaborate with Product on roadmap prioritisation, beta programme design, and release readiness validation from a field deployment perspective.
  • Partner with Marketing on technical content, competitive positioning, case studies, and applications-driven collateral.
  • Represent Applications Engineering in cross-functional leadership forums and contribute to strategic planning processes.

4. Operational Excellence & Execution Standards
  • Define and maintain execution standards, playbooks, templates, and reporting frameworks for the Applications Engineering team globally.
  • Own JIRA/Confluence governance for the function - ensuring project visibility, milestone tracking, and leadership reporting are standardised and reliable.
  • Establish and track key performance metrics for the team: deployment cycle time, evaluation-to-close conversion, customer adoption rates, rescan rates at deployed sites, and NPS.
  • Drive continuous improvement in delivery quality, documentation standards, and knowledge management across the team.

5. Regulatory, Compliance & Partner Enablement
  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks (CE-IVDR, FDA 510(k), GLP validation) as they apply to digital pathology deployments and customer requirements.
  • Support IMS and technology partner onboarding, technical integration validation, and joint go-to-market enablement.
  • Ensure PHI handling, data security, and information governance requirements are consistently addressed across all customer deployments.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in applications engineering, technical customer success, or related customer-facing technical functions in medical devices, diagnostics, life sciences, or imaging.
  • Leadership: 3+ years directly managing technical customer-facing teams, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
  • Technical: Strong understanding of imaging systems, biomedical device hardware/software, network architecture, and clinical lab workflows. Proficiency with JIRA/Confluence, Linux/Bash, and Python scripting for diagnostics.
  • Commercial: Demonstrated track record supporting Sales on strategic evaluations, RFP responses, and enterprise account development. Experience with fleet-level deployments at hospitals, AMCs, CROs, or pharma labs.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable presenting to C-suite, clinical leadership, and technical audiences simultaneously.

KEY ATTRIBUTES
  • Player-coach mindset - equally effective building the team and doing the work.
  • Customer-first orientation with a genuine interest in digital pathology and its clinical impact.
  • Ability to operate at multiple levels simultaneously: strategic planning, team management, and hands-on technical execution.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and skilled at building structure in a rapidly evolving product and market environment.
  • Strong cross-functional influencer - able to align Sales, Product, Engineering, and Operations without direct authority over all of them.
