About RRI

Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) is a global coalition of more than 200 organizations dedicated to advancing the forest, land, and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, Afro-descendant Peoples, and particularly women within these groups. RRI is coordinated by a Secretariat based in Washington, DC.


RRI and Campaign for Nature (CfN) launched the Community Land and Conservation Finance Initiative (CLARIFI) in January 2022. CLARIFI is an international funding mechanism to scale up support for secure community land rights. It aims to address the gap in investment in Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant (IP, LC, and AD) organizations and their allies.


Senior Associate, CLARIFI Communications

The Senior Associate, CLARIFI Communications, leads communications for the CLARIFI financing mechanism while supporting RRI's broader strategic communications efforts. The role develops accessible, compelling content that showcases CLARIFI's research, advocacy, partnerships, and impact across digital, print, media, and event platforms.

The successful candidate will be a versatile writer, editor, and storyteller who can transform complex data, research, and community narratives into accessible and engaging content. The Senior Associate will lead and contribute to blogs, impact reports, press materials, advocacy content, newsletters, and multimedia products while ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with CLARIFI's communications strategy.


Working across thematic and regional teams, the Senior Associate will support media engagement, event promotion, research dissemination, and coalition storytelling. Ideal candidates will have at least four years of relevant communications or journalism experience and a demonstrated commitment to equity, climate justice, and amplifying community voices.

This is a full-time position based in Montreal, Quebec, with the option to telework two days per week (Mondays and Fridays). Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada and located in the Montreal area prior to the start date.

Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of CLARIFI and working closely with the Director of Strategic Communications and other team members, the Senior Associate will:


Writing, Editing & Storytelling (30%)

  • Write, edit, and proofread digital-first content-including impact stories, blog posts, newsletters, web copy, fact sheets, social media content, scripts, presentations, and donor-facing materials for CLARIFI and the CLARIFI Director.
  • Lead creative storytelling initiatives documenting CLARIFI-funded pilot projects, rightsholder leadership, and community-driven conservation.
  • Coordinate the production of annual reports and other major publications, including writing, editing, proofreading, design, translation, and dissemination.
  • Translate and synthesize complex technical information into intuitive, locally relevant formats for use in infographics, advocacy materials, and digital assets.

Communications Strategy & Research Dissemination (20%)

  • Develop compelling presentations and talking points for international speaking engagements by the CLARIFI Director, CLARIFI team, Steering Committee members, and RRI leadership.
  • Lead the refinement and execution of CLARIFI's communications strategy, ensuring alignment with governance structures and stakeholder priorities.
  • Develop tailored dissemination plans for CLARIFI research, impact stories, and project communications, ensuring accessibility for rightsholders, donors, and partners.
  • Provide thought leadership on respectful, community-led knowledge generation and representation.
  • Prepare and distribute regular CLARIFI updates for staff, donors, and Board members.


Multimedia Production & Field Storytelling (15%)

  • Conceptualize, develop, and distribute multimedia content (slides, graphics, video, audio, photographs, podcasts) to highlight CLARIFI's impact and advocacy.
  • Travel internationally to project sites to conduct interviews with community members and document field experiences.
  • Support communications logistics for CLARIFI events-including planning content, briefing speakers, and coordinating translations or interpretation.


Media Relations & Public Affairs (15%)

  • Draft op-eds, press releases, talking points, and media statements for RRI leadership, CLARIFI governance bodies, and coalition members.
  • Serve as the main communications focal point with RRI's external PR firm for CLARIFI-related media inquiries.
  • Coordinate with the RRI Campaigns Specialist to identify proactive media opportunities to support grantees' advocacy campaigns.


Digital Communications & Brand Management (10%)

  • Maintain accurate, engaging, and current content on the CLARIFI website.
  • Enforce brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all CLARIFI outputs.
  • Define KPIs and track CLARIFI's digital performance (website, newsletters, social media), producing monthly analytics reports and recommendations on content improvements.

Project Coordination & Administration (10%)

  • Coordinate communications consultants, contracts, terms of reference, procurement, and related process improvements.
  • Ensure all work adheres to RRI's financial, ethical, and quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least four years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, communications, editing, or content development, preferably within the climate, human rights, environmental justice, or international development sectors.
  • Candidates must submit at least two professional writing samples demonstrating relevant experience and language.
  • Experience working with media and applying journalism best practices.
  • Experience writing and editing digital-first content with knowledge of SEO best practices, including for web and social media.
  • Demonstrated ability to transform complex data, research, and technical information into accessible and engaging stories and advocacy materials, including the effective use of imagery, graphs, and charts.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and competing deadlines, and to work well under pressure with discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, seek input when needed, and move projects forward across multiple teams.
  • A passion for social justice, equity, and human rights.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional proficiency in Spanish is highly preferred. Additional proficiency in Portuguese, or Bahasa Indonesia is an asset.
  • Experience working in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, rural communities, or grassroots organizations in multicultural or international settings.
  • Working knowledge of multimedia, design, and communications software, such as WordPress, WebFlow, Asana, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Canva, and Hootsuite.
  • Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder communications for international programs.
  • Education or experience in nonprofit marketing is an asset.
  • Experience managing publishing projects and coordinating deliverables across multiple teams while meeting deadlines.

Salary Range: CAD $61,000-$77,000.

  • Diriger des initiatives creatives de narration documentant les projets pilotes finances par CLARIFI, le leadership des detenteurs de droits et la conservation axee sur les communautes.
  • Coordonner la production des rapports annuels et d'autres publications majeures, y compris la redaction, la revision, la relecture, la conception graphique, la traduction et la diffusion.
