Position Overview

The Senior Wellness Coach is a service role for returning participants who have successfully completed one term of service as a Wellness Coach or member of a service organization who served in a school or an out of school time location. This position builds on the previous experience of providing social emotional supports in similar settings by engaging coaches in expanded direct service with youth and opportunities to provide peer mentorship and support to fellow participants.

Senior wellness coaches serve in Boston and surrounding area Public Schools and out of school time organizations, supporting students’ social-emotional development, including interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Coaches help create safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where youth can build skills and strengthen their connection to school.

In addition to direct service, Senior Wellness Coaches contribute to a collaborative service environment by sharing strategies, modeling effective practices, and supporting fellow participants through informal mentorship.

Senior Wellness Coaches are employees and will engage in structured service activities designed to address community needs. Senior coaches serve as team captains, ie. a point of contact for questions or concerns when the site coordinator or Walker supervisor is not immediately available.

What You Will Learn
Senior Wellness Coaches begin service on Monday, August 31st with a multi-week training focused on youth development, behavioral health, and trauma-informed practices. Throughout the service term, members continue to build skills in social-emotional skill-building and youth engagement strategies, evidence-informed coaching practices, group facilitation and structured intervention delivery, professional communication and collaboration in school settings, and reflective practice and service-based learning. Returning members also have opportunities to strengthen skills in peer mentorship, collaboration, and facilitation of group learning experiences.

Essential Functions

Beginning in September, coaches are placed at a Boston area schools where they complete regular, ongoing service aligned with student and site needs.

• Peer Mentorship & Team Support
  • Provide informal peer mentorship to newer members at one or more partner sites by sharing strategies, resources, and lessons learned from prior service experience
  • Model effective coaching practices and professional boundaries
  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team environment
  • Support group learning by co-facilitating training sessions or discussions, as appropriate
• Program Support Activities
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating student-centered events (e.g., wellness activities, school-based initiatives)
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and reflective practice sessions
• Service Documentation & Reflection
  • Accurately record service activities, student engagement, and required documentation
  • Participate in reflection and evaluation activities to support continuous program improvement
  • Utilize student level data to inform peer mentoring practices
  • Assist in the collection of site level data
• Direct Service with Youth
  • Provide individual and small-group coaching focused on social-emotional skill development
  • Facilitate structured activities that build skills in emotional regulation, communication, and goal setting
  • Monitor student engagement and support positive participation in program settings

Service Term & Schedule:

The Wellness Coach Project is seeking members for this position in the following slot type: 675 hr.  Your service year includes the following schedule:

• Service Term Available (Slot Type): 675-hour term, approximately 15 hours per week
• Schedule: Service hours typically align with school schedules (tentatively beginning at 7:30am and ending by 6pm, site specific times will be communicated during service site selection process) or out of school time schedules (tentatively beginning at 2pm and ending by 8pm, site specific times will be communicated during service site selection process)
• Service Period: Approximately 11 months (August 31st, 2026–July 17th, 2027), following the Boston Public Schools and Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston calendars

Qualifications

• Successfully completed one term as a Wellness Coach or served as a member of a service organization in a school or an out of school time location
• High School Diploma or GED required
• At least 18 years old at the start of service (August 31st)
• Able to commit to an 11-month (August 31st, 2026-July 17th, 2027) service term aligned with the Boston Public Schools and out of school time (OST) program calendar
• Willingness to complete required background checks
• Reliable means of transportation to attend service site and trainings
• Must be able to pass DESE Background Check Process

• Experience working with youth in educational or community settings
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Organizational and time management skills
• Comfort using basic computer systems for documentation
