Job Summary:
The Senior Theater Technician serves as a lead technical expert in the operation, maintenance, and supervision of theatrical systems and equipment. This role provides advanced support for lighting, sound, rigging, and stagecraft needs, ensuring high-quality technical execution for performances, rehearsals, and events. The Senior Technician also mentors junior staff and ensures compliance with safety standards.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate degree or certificate in technical theater, stagecraft, or related field.
  • Zero (0) to two (2) years of experience in technical theater, audio, lighting, video, stage managing, or performing rigging tasks.

OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,

AND
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with 2 year clean driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of theater production systems, including lighting design, audio engineering, and rigging.
  • Proficiency in operating digital lighting and sound boards (e.g., ETC, QLab, Yamaha, etc.).
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to train and direct a diverse technical team during high-pressure performances.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards (OSHA, NFPA) and best practices in theatrical environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with performers, clients, and community groups.

Travel:
  • Category B-Regular Local/Field Based Travel: This position requires regular travel within the County and nearby cities. Employees frequently travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings as part of their job duties. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.

Essential Functions:
  • Installs lighting and sound equipment, scenery, props, hair, makeup, and wardrobe materials for any event at the Union Colony Civic Center, and occasionally at other locations with or without direct supervision. Frequency: 65%
  • Local Crew Head for touring shows and concerts. Frequency: 20%
  • Assists with the operation and/or maintenance of lighting, props, hair, makeup, wardrobe, special effects, sound and video equipment. Frequency: 5%
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Technical Services Coordinator or Assistance Technical Services Coordinator. Frequency: 5%
  • Attend UCCC Technical Training sessions to obtain skills for promotion opportunities. Frequency: 5%
  • Technical Services Coordinator and Assistant Technical Services Coordinator, Supervisory, 40%
  • Senior Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Sr. Theater Tech., Manage Tasks, 30%
  • Tour Technical Staff, Manage Tasks, 30%
  • Incumbent is expected to solve a variety of problems in situations where there are substantially diversified procedures, specialized standards and only limited standardization.
  • Changing priorities or differing situations require the incumbent to consider which among many procedures should be followed in what sequence to achieve the required job results.
  • Requires reasoning to produce a practical course of action within the established process.
  • Choices fall within the range of specified, acceptable standards, alternatives and technical practices.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Work Environment:
  • Combination of office environment and work in the field at site locations.
  • Working hours vary greatly from early morning to very late nights, weekdays and weekends including some holidays.
  • Must be able to work in hazardous conditions, including but not limited to, inclement weather, in fumes from heavy equipment, and at heights in excess of 6 feet off the floor.
  • Possible exposure to special theatrical effects including but not limited to theatrical smoke and haze, flashing or strobe lights, and prolonged exposure to loud environment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Manual dexterity to operate computer, small and large hand tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Flexibility to bend, twist, and reach out to load and unload equipment and supplies.
  • Stamina and strength to move objects 20 - 250 pounds long distances.
  • Vision to operate a variety of equipment at work sites.
  • Required to stand and sit for long periods.
