The main difference between a Senior Test Manager and a Test Lead lies in scope and responsibilities. The Senior Test Manager oversees testing strategies and manages multiple teams, focusing on overall quality assurance. The Test Lead is more involved in day-to-day testing activities and team coordination. Both roles require similar certifications and skills, but the Senior Test Manager operates at a higher strategic level within the testing hierarchy.

How does a senior test manager typically collaborate with development and project management teams to ensure quality deliverables?

A Senior Test Manager works closely with development and project management teams by participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and review meetings. They facilitate clear communication about testing requirements, progress, and potential risks, ensuring that quality objectives align with project goals. By coordinating test plans, managing defect triage sessions, and providing regular status updates, the Senior Test Manager helps integrate quality assurance into the overall software development lifecycle. This collaborative approach not only streamlines issue resolution but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility for quality across teams.

What does a senior test manager do?

A Senior Test Manager oversees the testing activities within a software development or IT project to ensure that products meet quality standards before release. They are responsible for defining test strategies, managing test teams, coordinating with other departments, and ensuring all testing is completed on schedule. Senior Test Managers also analyze testing metrics, report on defects, and implement best practices to improve overall software quality. Their leadership is crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior test manager?

To thrive as a Senior Test Manager, you need expertise in software testing methodologies, test planning, and quality assurance, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related field and several years of testing experience. Familiarity with test management tools like JIRA, Selenium, ALM, and relevant certifications such as ISTQB Advanced Level are commonly required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help in managing diverse teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure efficient test processes, high-quality deliverables, and the successful delivery of complex software projects.

Job description

PsiQuantum's mission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.
Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.
Our architecture and approach is based on silicon photonics. By leveraging the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photons don't feel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.
In 2024, PsiQuantum announced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.
PsiQuantum also develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.
Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. It represents a fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot be solved any other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clear path to make it real.
Come join us.
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Test Manager to join our Photonics Test Engineering team. This role focuses on developing and scaling advanced test capabilities to support both R&D and high-volume manufacturing. Responsibilities include test enablement, tooling development, test recipe creation, data analysis, and driving technical decisions that improve test performance, throughput, and yield. The successful candidate will work closely with the broader photonics organization to develop next-generation electrical and optical test solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Improve system throughput, reliability, and test capability for electrical and optical characterization platforms, with a focus on wafer-level and edge-coupling test systems.
  • Develop and deploy circuit-level test methodologies, extending capabilities to high-speed, production-worthy, yield-sensitive testing.
  • Increase test tool throughput, availability, and scalability through hardware and software improvements.
  • Lead root-cause analysis of complex test failures and develop repair strategies and proactive monitoring solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with component development engineers to expand test capabilities and optimize high-volume manufacturing test processes.
  • Drive the development of new test infrastructure, automation, and measurement methodologies to support evolving product requirements.
  • Analyze test data and provide recommendations that guide engineering and manufacturing decisions.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians while helping establish best practices for test development and operations.
Experience & Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Photonic device testing and characterization, particularly wafer-scale or probe-based testing.
    • Electrical, RF, and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) testing.
    • Optical measurement systems, including imaging, fiber alignment, and fiber-coupled device characterization.
    • Development of automated test systems, test software, and measurement infrastructure.
    • Working in R&D, New Product Introduction (NPI), and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams and driving projects from concept through deployment.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with experience investigating complex system-level failures.
Preferred
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing test strategies and yield optimization.
  • Experience developing software for test automation, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC), test data analytics, and manufacturing quality systems.
