What are Senior Statistical Analysts?

Senior Statistical Analysts are experienced professionals who use advanced statistical methods to collect, analyze, and interpret complex data sets. They often design experiments, develop predictive models, and provide data-driven insights to support business decision-making. In addition to technical expertise, they may oversee junior analysts, collaborate with other departments, and present findings to stakeholders. Their work helps organizations understand trends, measure performance, and identify opportunities or risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Statistical Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Statistical Analyst, you need advanced knowledge of statistical theory, data analysis, and a relevant degree in statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Expertise with statistical software such as SAS, R, Python, and experience with data visualization tools are commonly required, along with certifications like SAS Certified Advanced Analytics Professional. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate complex data into actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate analysis, informed decision-making, and clear communication of findings to stakeholders.

How does a Senior Statistical Analyst typically collaborate with cross-functional teams on large projects?

Senior Statistical Analysts often work closely with professionals from departments such as data engineering, product management, and business analytics. They translate complex statistical findings into actionable insights, ensuring that technical results are accessible to non-technical stakeholders. Collaboration may involve regular meetings, joint project planning sessions, and iterative feedback loops to refine analyses based on shifting business priorities. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also provides opportunities for professional growth through exposure to diverse perspectives and expertise.

Job Description
Mission Pet Health is building a deeper understanding of how pet owners and clients engage across our owned products and touchpoints. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering and data engineering - responsible for defining how we measure client behavior, designing the experiments that test our assumptions, and partnering with engineering to instrument our products with the data infrastructure those efforts require.
This is a foundational role. You won't be handed a mature analytics stack - you'll help build it.
What You'll Do
Client Behavior Modeling
  • Define and maintain Mission Pet Health's client behavior model - the framework that describes how clients engage across their lifecycle (acquisition, activation, retention, lapse, reactivation)
  • Identify the key behavioral signals that predict meaningful outcomes (repeat visits, product adoption, lifetime value) and build the models that quantify them
  • Develop segmentation frameworks that allow teams to understand and act on distinct client cohorts

A/B Testing & Experimentation
  • Own the end-to-end experimentation program: hypothesis definition, experimental design, power analysis, instrumentation requirements, analysis, and recommendation
  • Establish organization-wide standards for statistical rigor - guardrail metrics, minimum detectable effects, sequential testing protocols, and significance thresholds
  • Partner with Product and Marketing to prioritize and sequence experiments; translate results into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders

Data Instrumentation & Beacon Definition
  • Author and maintain the organization's tracking plan - defining the events, properties, and user identifiers to be captured across web, mobile, and in-clinic touchpoints
  • Specify analytics beacons and event schemas for engineering teams to implement, including clear acceptance criteria and validation steps
  • Audit existing instrumentation for gaps and data quality issues; drive remediation in partnership with engineering
  • Ensure tracking design supports longitudinal analysis, cross-surface identity resolution, and downstream modeling needs

Data Modeling & Analytics Infrastructure
  • Define the data model that translates raw event streams into clean, analysis-ready assets - in partnership with data engineering
  • Design and document metric definitions, KPI trees, and measurement frameworks that become the organization's shared source of truth
  • Build and maintain dashboards and self-serve reporting for Product, Marketing, and clinical teams

Cross-Functional Communication & Influence
  • Serve as the primary analytics partner to Product, Engineering, and Marketing on behavioral and experimentation questions
  • Translate statistical findings into clear decision points for product, business, and leadership audiences - without dumbing it down
  • Present experiment results, model outputs, and measurement frameworks to cross-org stakeholders in ways that drive action
  • Educate teams on correct interpretation of data and experiment results; build org-wide statistical literacy over time

Responsibilities and Benefits
What You'll Need
Required
  • 6+ years in product analytics, data science, or a quantitative research role with direct ownership of behavioral analytics
  • Clear communicator who can translate statistical findings for product and business audiences
  • Strong applied statistics: hypothesis testing, regression, causal inference, power analysis, experiment design
  • Experience designing and implementing tracking plans and event instrumentation - including writing beacon/event specs for engineering
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one of Python or R
  • Experience building or contributing to a client/user behavior model from scratch

Preferred
  • Experience with product analytics platforms (Amplitude, Mixpanel, or similar)
  • Familiarity with dbt and cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, ClickHouse, BigQuery, or similar)
  • Experience in healthcare, veterinary, or appointment-based service businesses
  • Exposure to identity resolution across multiple product surfaces (web, app, in-person)
  • Background in Bayesian statistics or causal inference methods

What Success Looks Like
First 90 Days
  • Audit current instrumentation and data model; document gaps and prioritize remediation
  • Draft the v1 client behavior model and align stakeholders on its key dimensions and signals
  • Ship at least one experiment end-to-end with full documentation

First Year
  • A trusted, well-instrumented behavioral data foundation is in place
  • The experimentation program is running consistently, with clear standards and a prioritized backlog
  • Product and Marketing teams are making decisions grounded in the client behavior model you defined
  • Product analytics is an established discipline within the broader Product & Tech org - and you're leading it
