Job description

Lead Software Engineer – Synchrowave

Join Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) as a Lead Software Engineer where you will help shape the future of power system event analysis. The Synchrowave software team builds advanced tools that engineers around the world rely on to understand, diagnose, and improve power system performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and build features that automate power system event analysis, including fault location algorithms, waveform visualization, and reporting.
  • Lead technical design discussions, write design documents, and make architectural decisions that balance performance, maintainability, and usability.
  • Mentor developers on software design patterns and domain concepts.
  • Collaborate with protection engineers and UX designers to translate complex workflows into intuitive software experiences.
  • Investigate and resolve challenging technical issues.
  • Develop, review, and approve scopes, budgets, and schedules with a high standard of quality.
  • Model and apply SEL values, principles of operations, and world‑class manufacturing principles.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience with demonstrated technical leadership.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and experience building desktop or web applications with complex data processing.
  • Strong writing skills for clean, testable code and championing engineering best practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, and iterative delivery.
  • Effective communication with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Experience leading or mentoring a team of developers.
  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
  • Positive background check and negative drug test result(s).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license – preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Domain knowledge of electric power systems, protection and control, automation, and data analytics.
  • Experience with full‑stack development and containerization/microservice architectures.
  • Experience efficiently applying AI‑assisted development tools and evaluating AI/ML capabilities for product features.
  • Experience in electrical utilities, consulting, or system integration.
  • Working knowledge of Vision or other PM tracking software.
  • Extensive experience with power systems and customers.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
