Role Summary:

As a Senior Software Engineer with the Chicago Blackhawks, you’ll be a part of a small team, building end-to-end web applications, data pipelines, and services that power our sales, marketing, and operational teams. This is the role for a builder: you’ll take ambiguous business problems and own them from concept to production, working across the front-end, back-end, and data layer with a level of autonomy and breadth you won’t find on a larger team. The right candidate is a hands-on engineer who is energized by wearing multiple hats, solving problems, and learning new skills and stacks - and is excited to build the next generation of Blackhawks data and digital products.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Full-Stack Development:
    • Design, build, and maintain responsive front-end interfaces and robust back-end services for internal and fan-facing applications.
    • Develop and integrate RESTful APIs that connect applications, data sources, and third-party platforms.
    • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code across the full stack, owning features from concept to production.
    • Collaborate on code reviews and uphold engineering standards for quality, performance, and maintainability.
  2. Technical Ownership & Leadership:
    • Act as the Director of Engineering’s primary technical partner, helping shape the team’s roadmap, standards, and architectural direction.
    • Take ambiguous business problems and own them end-to-end - scoping, designing, building, and shipping with minimal oversight.
    • Help model engineering standards for a small team through code review, best practices, and documentation.
  3. Backend Systems:
    • Design, build, and maintain ELT pipelines from diverse data sources into the data warehouse and to other tools.
    • Optimize data extraction, loading, and transformation processes for performance, scalability, and application.
    • Build and optimize Salesforce CRM solutions to empower sales and marketing teams with actionable data and seamless integrations across platforms.
  4. Operational Improvements:
    • Identify automation opportunities to enhance data processing and onboarding efficiency.
    • Deliver short-term user wins while building infrastructure for long-term success.
    • Consistently build documentation to ensure efficient communication across the team.
    • Identify opportunities for refactoring code to simplify codebase, reduce costs, or improve processing.
  5. Security:
    • Develop secure, privacy-compliant solutions for all data processing and storage operations.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) for handling sensitive user data.
    • Implement security best practices such as encryption, access control, and monitoring.
  6. Team Collaboration:
    • Partner with departments (revenue, marketing, IT) to understand needs, define roadmaps, and develop solutions.
    • Foster collaboration using Agile methodologies and shared project management tools (e.g. Clickup, Github, AzureML).

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
  • 4+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience
  • Proficiency across both front-end and back-end development in a production environment
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript and at least one back-end language (e.g., Python, Node.js, Go)
    • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, or Angular)
    • Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL), cloud data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake), and transformation/orchestration tools (dbt, Airflow, Prefect).
    • Experience developing and utilizing cloud-based architecture to solve complex needs
    • Familiarity with version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing
    • Familiarity with AI-first development, and tools like Claude Code
    • Familiarity with Azure Cloud tools a plus
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong collaboration skills, working effectively with designers, product owners, and fellow engineers
    • Self-starter able to identify challenges, chart solutions, and execute improvements
    • Ability to understand business requirements and develop technical solutions to support departmental needs
    • Ability to manage priorities and coordinate tasks to solve day-to-day challenges in a dynamic environment
    • Strong communication skills with ability to demonstrate clear, concise articulation of scenarios, options, risks, mitigations, and recommendations
  • Ability to adapt to occasional variations in schedule including working nights, weekends, and holidays as business needs dictate based on the event calendar.
  • Must demonstrate our organizational values of integrity, curiosity, empathy, collaboration, and originality
