Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer 

Location:Waynesboro, GA

Contract- 3 Years

Client- Southern Nuclear

Position Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will serve as the technical lead for mechanical system design in support of new generation, environmental, and retrofit projects across power generation and heavy industrial facilities. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to independently make sound engineering decisions while directing design efforts and supporting field teams as needed.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical engineering design for small and medium retrofit, environmental, and new generation projects

  • Perform mechanical design activities including:

    • Pipe sizing & routing

    • Material selection

    • Valve selection & specification

    • Pipe support design

    • Equipment layout & equipment specifications

  • Develop and review P&IDs, equipment datasheets, and mechanical deliverables

  • Conduct hydraulic calculations; Pipe-Flo or equivalent software preferred

  • Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and engineering estimates

  • Provide technical direction to designers and review design output

  • Support system checkouts, commissioning, and startup as needed

  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements

  • Collaborate closely with plant staff, engineering teams, contractors, and vendors

  • Make independent engineering decisions with limited information and guidance


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited program)

  • 20+ years of mechanical engineering experience in power generation or heavy industrial settings

  • Extensive hands-on experience in:

    • Piping system design

    • Hydraulic/pump system calculations

    • Equipment selection (tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, BOP equipment)

    • P&ID development & checking

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Engineering design principles

    • ASME, API, and other relevant codes & standards

  • Demonstrated ability to lead design work and mentor designers


Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License

  • Pipe-Flo or similar hydraulic modeling software experience

  • Experience supporting commissioning and plant startup
