What is a senior simulation engineer?

Senior Simulation Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and analyze complex simulations to model real-world systems and processes. They use advanced software tools and mathematical models to predict performance, identify potential issues, and optimize designs in fields such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and energy. Their work helps organizations make informed decisions and improve product reliability and efficiency. Senior Simulation Engineers often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional groups to ensure the effective implementation of simulation solutions.

What are the typical collaboration points between a senior simulation engineer and other engineering teams?

As a Senior Simulation Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as design, development, and testing to ensure simulation models accurately reflect real-world conditions. This often involves attending design reviews, sharing simulation results, and providing feedback to optimize product performance. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as your insights directly influence design decisions and help troubleshoot issues early in the development cycle. Regular meetings and shared documentation platforms are commonly used to keep everyone aligned and informed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior simulation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically with a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency in simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS, or similar tools, along with experience in programming languages like Python or C++, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and interpreting complex data. These competencies ensure accurate modeling, effective project delivery, and innovation in designing and optimizing engineering systems.

What is the difference between Senior Simulation Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

Job description

Emerson is currently seeking a Structural Simulation Engineer in Marshalltown, IA. The individual selected for this critical roll will be responsible for the application of FEA technologies in solving business critical problems related to loads on structures. This role is primarily focused on providing FEA analyses to the Fisher Controls Business Units and larger organization, but would also include opportunities to contribute to the development of new simulation capabilities.

As a Structural Simulation Engineer You Will:
  • Independently perform, interpret and report assigned analyses within the scope of Simulation Best Practices (SBP)
  • Support senior simulation engineers in developing new simulation capabilities
  • Identify and implement improvements and automations to simulation workflows.
  • Liaise with assigned design groups and actively follow design projects.
  • Review other’s work for appropriate model setup and properties.
  • Ensure compliance of analysis activities to internal standards.
  • Evaluate Emerson products for adequate pressure boundary design per ASME and internal standards
  • Evaluate proposed designs for fatigue, vibration, and thermal effects, to ensure robust products across a wide range of operating conditions
Who You Are:

You have attention to detail that allows you to identify errors others miss, and curiosity that drives continual learning and improvement. You readily distinguish between what’s relevant and what’s unimportant to make sense of complex situations. You remain energized and effective when faced with ambiguity and uncertainty. You enjoy collaborating with a global team, allowing others across the organization to achieve shared objectives.

For This Role, You Will Need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or other related field is required
  • Working knowledge of fundamental physics associated with structural mechanics
  • Entry level knowledge of Python
  • Legal authorization to work in the US - visa sponsorship will not be provided
Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
  • Experience with fluids or structural simulation
  • Experience with product development or sustaining engineering
  • Strong CAD skills to manipulate and modify geometry
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system
  • Practical experience with AI or creating AI Agents
