Field Service Engineer, Automation and Controls

Seattle, WA, USA

Job Description SUMMARY OF POSITION

This is an opportunity to grow into a unique technical position while representing cutting‑edge automation technology. You'll become the automation product line expert, directly supporting customer maintenance teams and indirectly leading them through your expertise. You'll work alongside project managers and sales staff, bridging the gap between engineering, operations, and customer support.

Essential Functions

  • Diagnose and repair complex industrial control systems, including, but not limited to: PLCs, CNC controllers, field bus networks, and drive systems
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and have ability to use a multimeter to diagnose electrical circuits
  • Coordinate and interface directly with customers, suppliers, and other entities to ensure that all customer requirements, goals and objectives are fully understood and communicated to senior management
  • Support field service engineers by traveling to customer sites to perform new machine commissioning, planned preventive maintenance, machine controls upgrades, emergency service, and operator training for customers
  • Follow policy and procedures including safe working practices
  • Provide input for service bids and quotes
  • Automated controls system programming
  • Any additional duties assigned by management
Required Skills, Education & Experience

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful job performance will be considered. Typical qualifications would be:

  • 5-10 years of field service experience or 2-3 years of controls engineer experience
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Able to work at the company or customer facilities, in excess of eight hours per day or 40 hours per week on a second shift and/or weekends if necessary
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience demonstrating problem solving abilities and resourcefulness
  • This position must meet export control compliance requirements, therefore a “U.S. person” as defined by 22.c.f.r. § is required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in aerospace manufacturing & assembly
  • Experience working in automation and/or machine tools industry
  • Familiarity with Siemens automation and controls systems
  • Ability to learn new software developments in automation
  • Capable of building automated assemblies
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing practices including machining and automated drill and fill
  • A demonstrated capability to think strategically and execute tactically
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to think independently and problem solve
  • Display a level of professionalism at all times
  • 5-10 years of field service experience or 2-3 years of controls engineer experience

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Typically sits for extended periods at a computer workstation
  • May access and work in the manufacturing plant
  • While performing the duties of this job, employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles
  • The employee may be exposed to vibration
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • May be required to travel to other site locations during the work day
  • May be required to work weekends to meet department and business demands
  • Work with safe manufacturing processes and understand that eyewear is mandatory in the manufacturing area
  • Knows that safety shoes are recommended in the manufacturing area
