Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer information

What does a senior sensor fusion engineer do?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer designs and implements algorithms that integrate data from multiple sensors, such as cameras, radars, and lidars, to create a comprehensive understanding of the environment. This role is essential in fields like autonomous vehicles, robotics, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Senior engineers not only develop and optimize fusion algorithms, but also analyze sensor data, ensure system reliability, and mentor junior team members. They often collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and performance. Their expertise helps improve the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of complex sensor-based systems.

How does a senior sensor fusion engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of perception systems?

As a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer, you will work closely with software engineers, hardware designers, data scientists, and product managers to integrate data from multiple sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, and RADAR. Collaboration often involves defining sensor requirements, troubleshooting integration issues, and optimizing algorithms for real-time performance. Regular cross-team meetings and code reviews are common, ensuring alignment on system architecture and performance targets. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-specialists are key to success in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior sensor fusion engineer, and why are they important?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer requires advanced knowledge of sensor technologies, signal processing, and algorithms, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as C++, Python, and MATLAB, as well as experience with tools like ROS and sensor simulation platforms, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable sensor fusion systems that enable accurate perception and decision-making in complex environments such as autonomous vehicles or robotics.

What is the difference between Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer vs Sensor Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Sensor Fusion EngineerSensor Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; experience with sensor data processingBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of sensor integration
Work EnvironmentResearch and development teams, automotive, aerospace, robotics industriesDesign and testing of sensor systems, often in automotive, industrial, or consumer electronics sectors
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in autonomous vehicles, robotics, aerospace for sensor data fusionUsed in product development, sensor integration, and system testing in similar industries

The main difference is that a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer focuses on integrating multiple sensor data sources to create cohesive perception systems, often requiring advanced algorithms and data processing skills. In contrast, a Sensor Systems Engineer typically handles the design, implementation, and testing of sensor hardware and systems. Both roles are vital in industries like automotive and aerospace but differ in their core responsibilities and expertise areas.

Job description

Senior Sensors Engineer (Contract)

Company Overview

Sabi is developing a next-generation AI wearable that combines ultra-high-density neural sensing with a Brain Foundation Model to decode neural signals and convert thought into text without surgery. The company is focused on advancing noninvasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology through an EEG-powered wearable platform.

Position Summary

This person will own the end-to-end non-EEG sensor architecture, hardware, and algorithms for a sensor-rich wearable platform. The primary focus is PPG sensing systems, including optical hardware, heart rate, HRV algorithms, and sensor fusion across multiple sensing modalities. This is a highly visible leadership role reporting into the Head of Hardware and working closely with the CEO and CTO.

Key Requirements

• 10+ years of sensor or wearable hardware development experience.
• Deep expertise with PPG sensor systems (highest-priority skill set).
• Experience owning a sensing system from architecture through product launch.
• Strong analog front-end design experience.
• Experience with sensor selection, validation, calibration, characterization, and BOM ownership.
• Experience with heart rate and HRV algorithms in real-world wearable environments.
• Experience integrating multiple sensor modalities including optical, inertial, temperature, and environmental sensing.
• Strong cross-functional experience partnering with EE, Firmware, Mechanical Engineering, and Product Design teams.
• Comfortable working hands-on in the lab and collaborating with overseas CMs.

Preferred Background

• Sensor Systems Architect experience.
• SpO2, ECG, EDA, EMG, or additional health-sensing experience.
• Sensor fusion and multimodal sensing expertise.
• Human physiology or biomechanics knowledge.
• Consumer wearable startup or founding engineer experience.
• Experience leading sensor teams and subsystem development.

Location: Palo Alto, CA (Hybrid Schedule, 2 days/week in office)
Duration: 12-month contract with extension/conversion possibilities
Pay Rate Range: $75 to $95/h (DOE)
