Senior Seismic Engineer information

What is a senior seismic engineer?

Senior Seismic Engineers are highly experienced professionals who specialize in analyzing, designing, and overseeing structures to ensure they can withstand seismic activities like earthquakes. They use advanced engineering principles and seismic codes to assess risks, develop earthquake-resistant structures, and retrofit existing buildings. In addition to technical analysis, they often manage teams, coordinate with other engineering disciplines, and provide guidance on seismic safety standards for large-scale infrastructure projects.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a senior seismic engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Seismic Engineer, you need an in-depth understanding of structural engineering, seismic analysis, and building codes, typically supported by a civil engineering degree and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with seismic modeling software such as ETABS, SAP2000, and AutoCAD, as well as familiarity with relevant standards like ASCE 7, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills help you manage complex projects and coordinate multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial to ensuring the safety, compliance, and resilience of structures in earthquake-prone regions.

How does a senior seismic engineer collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during large infrastructure projects?

Senior Seismic Engineers often work closely with structural engineers, geotechnical experts, architects, and project managers to ensure that infrastructure designs meet seismic safety standards. They play a key role in reviewing site conditions, conducting seismic risk assessments, and recommending design modifications to enhance resilience. Regular coordination meetings, detailed reporting, and technical presentations are common, enabling all team members to stay aligned on project goals and regulatory requirements. This collaborative environment fosters professional growth and ensures that complex projects are delivered safely and efficiently.

What is the difference between Senior Seismic Engineer vs Geotechnical Engineer?

AspectSenior Seismic EngineerGeotechnical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, seismic certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, geotechnical certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning seismic-resistant structures, analyzing earthquake impactsSoil analysis, foundation design, site investigations
Industry UsageConstruction, infrastructure, earthquake-prone regionsConstruction, mining, environmental projects

While both roles require civil engineering backgrounds and related certifications, Senior Seismic Engineers focus on earthquake-resistant design and seismic analysis, whereas Geotechnical Engineers specialize in soil and foundation assessments. They often collaborate but serve distinct functions within construction and infrastructure projects.

Job description

Overview

ORAU is conducting the search on behalf of Centrus Energy for a permanent, fulltime Sr. Civil/Structural Design Engineer in Piketon, OH.

Shape the future of energy infrastructure at the American Centrifuge Plant (ACP) in Piketon, Ohio. Centrus Energy is seeking an experienced, proactiveย Civil/Structural Design Engineerย to lead the engineering development, analysis, and execution of facility modifications within a high-stakes, safety-critical environment. In this role, you will bridge the gap between design concepts and field execution, ensuring all structural steel, concrete systems, foundations, and equipment supports meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance from design to turnover.ย

Responsibilities
  • Lead Structural Design & Analysis:ย Drive civil/structural engineering for site modifications, performing complex analyses for static and dynamic loads, including wind, seismic, vibration, and thermal effects-to verify structural capacity for new and existing systems.
  • Engineering Deliverables:ย Develop, review, and redline comprehensive design packages (drawings, specifications, calculations) for foundations, structural steel, and equipment anchorage, focusing on buildability and reducing field rework risk.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination:ย Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and I&C teams to ensure seamless integration of equipment loads, penetrations, and layout constraints.
  • Field Engineering & Compliance:ย Support construction through field walkdowns, RFI/RFC resolution, and as-built updates, ensuring all work adheres to stringent configuration control and safety regulations.
  • Procurement & Project Support:ย Develop detailed, code-compliant procurement packages (ROMs, SOWs) for subcontracted fabrication and installation, supporting technical bid evaluations.ย
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experienced professional (5+ yrs) with a strong background in structural design, analysis, and field support, preferably within a regulated, industrial, or nuclear environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of AISC, ACI, and applicable seismic/building codes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a "Q" level security clearance.ย

This position will require a pre-employment background check and a pre-employment drug test.

This position requires the successful candidate to obtain and maintain a Q security clearance.ย  Candidates for positions requiring a security clearance are required to be tested for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR 707.4 prior to an offer of employment being made.ย  In addition, once employed, employees will become part of a random drug testing program and may also be tested in the event of any incident causing injury or causing damage to property, or if it is determined that there is a reasonable suspicion the employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.ย  This position will require preemployment background check on the part of the Company and in order to receive a Q security clearance, a background investigation by the Federal government.ย  Subsequent Federal government reinvestigations may be required.
