Job description

Farnsworth Group is seeking an Electrical Project Engineer - Healthcare in one of the posting locations below. The Electrical Project Engineer – Healthcare delivers project‑level electrical and low‑voltage designs for hospitals, ambulatory care, behavioral health, and other complex institutional facilities across the Midwest. The role emphasizes power, lighting, life‑safety, and low‑voltage design, coordination with other disciplines, and support of project managers and engineering managers.
Posting Locations for this role: Lisle, Normal, Peoria, Champaign, or Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO
What You’ll Do
  • Serve as project electrical engineer on healthcare and institutional projects, handling daily design and coordination under the direction of an electrical manager or senior PM.
  • Design normal and emergency power distribution systems (one‑lines, panel schedules, feeders, branch circuits, equipment connections), including essential electrical systems for healthcare facilities (generators, ATS, critical branch distribution).
  • Design lighting and lighting control systems, including layouts and photometric calculations, meeting code, energy, and user requirements.
  • Design life‑safety and low‑voltage systems such as fire alarm, nurse call, structured cabling, and grounding/bonding in coordination with technology and security resources.
  • Support power system studies (short‑circuit, coordination, arc‑flash, voltage drop) using appropriate tools under senior guidance.​
  • Produce coordinated drawings, specifications, and reports in Revit/BIM in collaboration with architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and technology disciplines.
  • Conduct field investigations and site observations to verify existing conditions and conformance.
  • Apply NEC, NFPA 70, 72, 99, 101, 110, FGI Guidelines, and state/local regulations for healthcare facilities in Illinois, Missouri, and nearby states.
  • Provide technical guidance and QA redlines to designers/junior engineers; support PMs with scope, level‑of‑effort, and schedule input; participate in client and internal coordination meetings.
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; EIT required, PE or ability to obtain preferred.
  • Typically, 8-12+ years of building electrical design experience, including healthcare or other mission‑critical/institutional projects in an AEC/MEP consulting environment.
  • Proven experience as a project‑level electrical engineer responsible for design production and multi‑disciplinary coordination.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC and relevant NFPA/FGI healthcare standards.
  • Proficiency with Revit/BIM for electrical systems; experience with SKM, ETAP, or similar tools preferred.
  • Experience designing normal and emergency power, lighting, life‑safety, and low‑voltage systems for healthcare or similarly regulated facilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Salary Range: $99,000 - $149,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, as well as internal and external equity)
