Senior Ruby Rails information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer, you need advanced knowledge of Ruby, Rails framework, SQL databases, and a solid background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, testing frameworks (RSpec or Minitest), and deployment tools such as Docker or AWS is typically required. Leadership, strong problem-solving, and clear communication skills help in mentoring junior developers and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the development of robust, maintainable applications and drive project success in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Ruby on Rails developers when working on large-scale applications?

Senior Ruby on Rails developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing application performance, maintaining code quality in a growing codebase, and ensuring scalability as user demands increase. They are typically tasked with refactoring legacy code, implementing best practices for testing, and integrating new technologies or services. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including frontend developers, DevOps, and product managers—is essential to address these challenges effectively and deliver robust, maintainable applications.

What are Senior Ruby on Rails developers?

Senior Ruby on Rails developers are experienced software engineers who specialize in building, maintaining, and optimizing web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They are responsible for designing robust backend architectures, writing efficient code, mentoring junior developers, and ensuring best practices in security and performance. Typically, they have several years of hands-on experience with Ruby, Rails, and related technologies, enabling them to handle complex technical challenges and contribute to the overall strategy of software projects.

Medsender

New York, NY • On-site

$160K - $220K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO

Posted 21 days ago

Job description

About Medsender:
Healthcare runs on documents, and that work is still painfully manual. Medsender's AI Medical Assistant® automates the drudgery-classifying documents, extracting key fields, syncing data to EHRs, and automates workflows-so clinicians can focus on care and patients can be seen faster. In the past year alone, providers saved millions of hours using Medsender. We integrate with leading EHRs and deliver mission‑critical reliability for thousands of providers.
The opportunity: We're small, shipping fast, and tackling high‑impact problems at the intersection of AI, healthcare data, and reliability. You'll take ownership of meaningful systems, grow alongside a high-caliber team, and have an outsized impact on what we build and how we build it.
What you'll do
  • Own meaningful components within our core systems: From design to production-across our AI‑powered intake, referral, and document automation pipelines.
  • Build for scale & correctness in a regulated environment: resilient workflows, idempotent jobs, auditability, and strong observability.
  • Ship AI features responsibly: integrate LLMs into product workflows (prompting, retrieval, eval harnesses, safety guardrails), optimize performance, and measure real‑world impact.
  • Integrate with EHRs/EMRs and third‑party systems; design stable APIs and event‑driven services that keep patient charts in sync.
  • Partner with product & customers to turn ambiguous workflows into clean, scalable automation.
What success looks like (30/60/90)
  • 30 days: You've ramped on a core service, shipped a meaningful production change, and authored a concise design doc for upcoming work.
  • 60 days: You're operating independently in your area. You are owning a feature or component, driving its design and delivery, and contributing to decisions beyond your immediate work.
  • 90 days: You've delivered a substantive project end-to-end.
What we're looking for
  • Senior scope: 4-7 years building production systems (or equivalent impact) and a track record of delivering complex projects independently.
  • Strong backend fundamentals: service design, data modeling, transactions, background processing, performance profiling, observability.
  • Pragmatic builder: you write crisp design docs, slice scope intelligently, and iterate with tight feedback loops.
  • Excellent communicator who collaborates effectively across functions and brings clarity in ambiguous environments.
  • Security & privacy mindset (bonus if you've worked with PHI or in regulated environments).

Nice to have
  • Ruby on Rails or Python at scale; polyglot comfort (we use Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Go).
  • Experience integrating LLMs in production (prompt/RAG patterns, evaluation frameworks, and safety/guardrails).
  • GCP & Kubernetes, and modern observability (OpenTelemetry).
  • SQL depth (MySQL) and data pipeline experience.
  • Early‑stage startup experience (0→1 and 1→N).

What We Offer:
  • Competitive salary and equity package (early exercise, extended exercise).
  • Great health benefits! (includes health, dental, and vision).
  • Unlimited paid time off (PTO) and holiday schedule to support work.
  • Regular company off-sites and engineering meetups.
