What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior RPG Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior RPG Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in RPG IV/ILE programming, experience with IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, and a solid understanding of business application development. Familiarity with CL, SQL, DB2 databases, and source control tools like Git is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as IBM Certified Developer - Power Systems. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with business stakeholders and mentoring junior programmers. These skills and qualifications ensure robust, efficient solutions that align with organizational needs and facilitate seamless legacy system maintenance and modernization.

What are some common challenges Senior RPG Programmers face when integrating legacy systems with modern technologies?

Senior RPG Programmers often encounter challenges when bridging legacy IBM i (AS/400) applications with newer technologies such as web services or cloud-based platforms. These challenges include managing outdated codebases, ensuring data integrity during migration, and interfacing traditional RPG code with modern APIs or middleware. Successful integration typically requires a deep understanding of both legacy RPG and modern programming concepts, as well as strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams like IT infrastructure and business analysts. Staying updated on IBM i enhancements and best practices is also crucial for overcoming these integration hurdles.

What is the difference between Senior Rpg Programmer vs Rpg Developer?

AspectSenior Rpg ProgrammerRpg Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, experience in RPG programmingSimilar educational background, often with less experience
Work EnvironmentLarge enterprise systems, gaming companies, or legacy business applicationsSoftware development teams, gaming studios, or legacy system maintenance

The main difference between a Senior Rpg Programmer and an Rpg Developer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior Rpg Programmers typically have more years of experience, take on leadership roles, and handle complex projects, whereas Rpg Developers may be earlier in their careers with similar technical skills but less oversight responsibility.

What are Senior RPG Programmers?

Senior RPG Programmers are experienced software developers who specialize in programming with RPG (Report Program Generator), a high-level programming language primarily used on IBM's midrange systems like the AS/400 (now IBM iSeries). They are responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications using RPG, as well as integrating them with other systems. In addition to strong programming skills, they often provide technical leadership, mentoring, and troubleshooting expertise within their teams or organizations.

Job description

MEDHOST, a division of Harris, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, IBM i / RPG, to design, develop, modernize, test, and support enterprise healthcare software solutions on the IBM i platform, also known as AS/400 or iSeries.

This role requires recent hands on experience developing and supporting RPG applications in a production IBM i environment. Candidates must have personally written, modified, debugged, tested, and supported ILE RPG / RPGLE code. RPG listed only as a general skill, legacy exposure, training topic, or resume keyword will not meet the minimum requirements for this role.

The successful candidate will own complex product enhancements, resolve production issues, contribute to modernization initiatives, mentor developers, and help improve the reliability, maintainability, and scalability of MEDHOST's healthcare software products.

Candidates may be asked to deliver a short technical presentation during the interview process. Experience supporting long lived commercial software products or enterprise production systems is strongly preferred.

This remote role welcomes candidates anywhere in the US. Candidates must be able to collaborate during core Central Time business hours.

Salary:

110K - 145K

What your impact will be:

  • Design, construct, test, debug, and support technical solutions on the IBM i platform.
  • Develop and maintain applications using ILE RPG / RPGLE, CL, embedded SQL, Db2 for i, SQL procedures, and user-defined functions.
  • Own complex product enhancements, defect resolution, production issues, and assigned project components.
  • Analyze existing IBM i applications and recommend practical improvements to reliability, maintainability, performance, and supportability.
  • Contribute to modernization efforts by improving legacy RPG code structure, reducing technical debt, and supporting more modular, SQL-driven application design.
  • Apply engineering standards for code quality, testing, configuration management, documentation, security, and release readiness.
  • Provide accurate effort estimates and deliver assigned work within agreed schedules.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve high-complexity application, data, batch, integration, and performance issues.
  • Participate in architecture, design, and technical review discussions for IBM i applications and related integrations.
  • Identify system, application, and engineering process deficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Help prioritize development tasks for junior and mid-level staff.
  • Mentor other developers through technical guidance, design review, troubleshooting support, and code quality feedback.
  • Collaborate with product owners, QA, DBAs, architects, support, implementation, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable product changes.
  • Maintain the effectiveness and implementation of the MEDHOST Quality Management System and meet applicable regulatory requirements as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required to support organizational and product needs.

Candidate Screening Expectations

During the interview process, candidates may be asked to discuss a recent RPG/RPGLE enhancement they personally delivered, including the business purpose, technical components involved, testing approach, and deployment process.

Candidates should be able to clearly explain their direct contributions to IBM i and RPG development projects.

What we are looking for:

  • 7+ years of commercial software or enterprise application development experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on IBM i development experience.
  • Recent professional experience developing, maintaining, debugging, and supporting production RPG applications on IBM i, including RPG/RPGLE work within the last 3 years.
  • Strong working knowledge of ILE RPG / RPGLE, including fixed-format and/or free-form RPG, CL, embedded SQL, Db2 for i, physical files, logical files, source physical files, service programs, batch processing, and IBM i job troubleshooting.
  • Strong SQL skills, including Db2 for i queries, joins, stored procedures, SQL functions, data analysis, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Experience owning complex enhancements, defects, production issues, or modernization work in a long-lived product or enterprise system.
  • Experience participating in sprint planning, backlog refinement, story estimation, daily coordination, code review, and iterative software delivery.
  • Experience with software version control, change management, controlled promotion, and release processes.
  • Understanding of testing practices, including unit, system, integration, regression, and performance testing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and guide other developers.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, communicate risks early, and deliver within agreed timelines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience developing and supporting enterprise software solutions will be considered.

What would make you stand out:

  • Experience modernizing legacy RPG applications.
  • Experience with free-form RPG and SQL-first development patterns.
  • Experience with modular IBM i design, including service programs, procedures, modules, reusable business logic, or layered application design.
  • Experience with RDi, Aldon, Git, Jira, Confluence, or similar development and delivery tools.
  • Experience with healthcare software, financial systems, billing, EHR, clinical workflows, regulated software, or other business-critical production environments.
  • Experience with APIs, HL7, interface engines, web services, JSON, XML, or cross-platform integrations.
  • Experience applying design patterns, SOLID principles, MVC, DAO, service-layer design, or similar architecture concepts.
  • Experience improving performance in Db2 for i applications.
  • Experience creating technical documentation, design notes, troubleshooting guides, or knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Experience with long-lived commercial software products or enterprise production systems.

What we can offer:

  • 3 weeks' vacation and 5 personal days
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits starting from your first day of employment
  • Employee stock ownership and RRSP/401k matching programs
  • Lifestyle rewards
  • Remote work and more!
