What is a senior RPG developer?

Senior RPG Developers are experienced software engineers who specialize in developing and maintaining applications using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, primarily on IBM i (AS/400) systems. They are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and implementing business solutions, often in legacy environments. In addition to strong technical skills, they typically provide mentorship to junior developers and collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure that applications meet organizational needs. Their expertise is crucial for companies relying on IBM i systems for core business operations.

What are some of the typical challenges a senior RPG developer might face when maintaining legacy IBM i systems?

As a Senior RPG Developer, you may frequently encounter challenges related to maintaining and modernizing legacy IBM i (AS/400) applications. Common issues include deciphering poorly documented code, integrating RPG with newer technologies, and ensuring system stability while implementing enhancements. Collaboration with business analysts and end-users is often necessary to accurately interpret legacy system requirements. Additionally, you may be responsible for mentoring junior developers and setting best practices to ensure code quality across the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior RPG developer?

To thrive as a Senior RPG Developer, a strong command of RPG programming (including ILE RPG and Free Format), experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a background in software development are essential. Familiarity with technical tools such as DB2 databases, CL programming, software version control (e.g., Git), and relevant certifications like IBM Certified Developer are typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with stakeholders and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure efficient maintenance and enhancement of legacy systems, enabling business continuity and technological advancement.

At SBH, our purpose is to inspire a more colorful, confident, and welcoming world. We are the leader in professional hair color, selling and distributing professional beauty supplies across 11 countries through our Sally Beauty and Beauty Systems Group businesses. Sally Beauty offers products for hair color, hair care, nails, and skin care to retail customers looking for salon quality products at a value price. Beauty Systems Group, branded as Cosmo Prof or Armstrong McCall stores, along with its direct sales consultants, sell professionally branded products intended for use and resale by salons to retail consumers.

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled and domain-expert Senior Software Engineer join our Supply Chain Technology team. This is a critical role during a transformative period for our logistics network. We are currently migrating our distribution centers from a legacy, in-house built iSeries (AS/400) WMS to Manhattan Active Warehouse Management (MAWM).

In this role, you will bridge the gap between legacy operations and future-state cloud technology. You will split your time between supporting Distribution Centers on existing iSeries WMS platform and driving the configuration, testing, and deployment of the new Manhattan Active WM application. As migration progresses, your focus will heavily shift toward becoming a primary subject matter expert and developer for Manhattan Active WM

Responsibilities

  • System Migration & Dual Support: Support daily Distribution Center (DC) operations on the legacy iSeries WMS while actively executing project tasks to migrate sites to Manhattan Active WM.
  • MAWM Configuration & Implementation: Partner with implementation teams to configure the Manhattan Active WM application to meet specific distribution center operational workflows, inventory strategies, and sorting parameters.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Design, develop, and deploy operational reports and dashboards using Cognos SCI (Supply Chain Intelligence) to ensure seamless data visibility post-migration.
  • Document & Label Design: Build, modify, and test critical logistics documents, compliance labels, and operational reports required for warehouse floor execution.
  • Requirements & Documentation: Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders and program managers to gather robust technical and business requirements, translating them into well-structured user stories and documentation within Jira.
  • Testing & Quality Assurance: Play an active role in progressive testing phases (System Integration Testing, User Acceptance Testing) by writing test cases, validating data flows between systems, and debugging configuration issues.
  • Go-Live & Hypercare Support: Provide dedicated, on-site or remote technical support during critical go-live windows and the immediate hypercare period to ensure minimal disruption to DC operations.
  • Cloud & Integration: Work within GCP to manage and troubleshoot data integration patterns, ensuring real-time communication between the warehouse, carriers, and customers.
  • Multi-Platform Evolution: While your initial focus is WMS, you will progressively take on projects involving Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other integrated logistics applications.

Knowledge, skills & abilities requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 7+ years of hands-on software development and systems analysis experience within the Warehouse Management / Supply Chain Logistics domain.
  • Legacy Systems: Extensive technical experience with the IBM iSeries (AS/400) platform, including proficiency in RPG, RPGLE, CL, and strong SQL skills for database management and data extraction.
  • WMS Knowledge: Deep understanding of core distribution center processes (Inbound receiving, put away, inventory management, replenishment, picking, sorting, wave management, and outbound shipping).
  • Modern WMS Experience: Hands-on exposure to or training in Manhattan Active Warehouse Management (MAWM) or recent versions of Manhattan WMOS is highly preferred.
  • Tools & Reporting: Experience with or strong aptitude to quickly learn Cognos SCI for supply chain reporting.
  • Proficiency using Jira for requirement gathering, task tracking, and Agile project documentation.

Competencies & attributes

  • Adaptability: Proven ability to manage technical debt on legacy applications while rapidly upskilling and executing deployments on modern, cloud-native SaaS architectures.

  • Analytical Problem Solving: Strong ability to analyze complex technical logs, map data elements between disparate systems, and resolve integration issues.

  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of translating complex technical realities into clear business requirements for stakeholders and project leaders.

Working conditions & physical requirements

This will be a hybrid role required to be on site at the Corporate office on specified days. The work environment generally involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, retail stores, and residences or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

The work is sedentary; however, occasional travel to company locations may be required. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, files, books, small parts; using a keyboard, driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Benefits

We offer a competitive salary and outstanding benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life Insurance, paid vacation and sick days, paid holidays, tuition reimbursement and 401(k) with company match. In addition, associates of SBH may take advantage of our in-house salon with complementary services and a varied selection of food options at our corporate campus. Also, featured at our corporate campus, is both a Sally Beauty and CosmoProf Professional onsite store, where associates enjoy a great merchandise discount!
