Job Description Summary:
Position Responsibilities
Patient Flow & Capacity Management
  • Maintain real-time oversight of hospital bed availability across all inpatient and observation units.
  • Coordinate patient placement decisions based on acuity, isolation status, service line, staffing, and bed readiness.
  • Prioritize admissions from the Emergency Department, PACU, procedural areas, and direct admissions.
  • Facilitate internal patient transfers to optimize unit capacity and census balance.

Throughput & Discharge Optimization
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders, physicians, case management, and ancillary departments to expedite discharges.
  • Proactively identify barriers to patient flow (pending discharges, bed turnaround delays, staffing constraints).
  • Partner with Environmental Services to ensure timely bed turnover and room readiness.
  • Support alternative discharge pathways (e.g., discharge lounge, observation units).

Operational Command & Communication
  • Serve as the centralized communication hub for bed status, surge planning, and census management.
  • Lead daily capacity huddles and escalation calls during high census or surge events.
  • Communicate effectively with ED leadership, nursing supervisors, physicians, and hospital administration.
  • Escalate capacity concerns and recommend mitigation strategies when thresholds are met.

Data, Metrics & Performance Improvement
  • Monitor and report key throughput metrics (LOS, ED boarding time, bed turnaround time, diversion hours).
  • Identify trends and opportunities for process improvement in patient flow.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to capacity management and patient safety.
  • Utilize electronic bed management systems and dashboards to support decision-making.

Surge & Emergency Preparedness
  • Activate surge protocols in collaboration with Nursing leaders and Nursing supervisor during high census, disasters, or internal capacity constraints.
  • Support opening/closing of units or flex beds as directed by leadership.
  • Collaborate with administrative supervisors during after-hours and weekend operations.

Qualifications
  • License/Registration/Certification
    • Current Florida State License. BLS certification
  • Education
    • BSN required.
  • Experience
    • 2 years of acute hospital experience as a RN required.
    • Leadership experience (Charge Nurse, House Supervisor, Director, or Operations role) preferred.
