What is a senior prototype technician?

Senior Prototype Technicians are skilled professionals responsible for building, testing, and refining prototype products or components before they go into full-scale production. They work closely with engineers and designers to interpret technical drawings, assemble prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and provide feedback for design improvements. Their expertise is crucial in ensuring that prototypes meet design specifications and function as intended, helping companies innovate and bring new products to market efficiently.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a senior prototype technician?

To thrive as a Senior Prototype Technician, you need advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, strong problem-solving abilities, and experience with prototype fabrication, usually backed by a technical degree or relevant certifications. Expertise in using CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and rapid prototyping tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills for collaborating with engineers and iterating designs. These skills ensure the efficient creation and refinement of prototypes that meet design specifications and project deadlines.

What challenges does a senior prototype technician face during the product development cycle?

Senior Prototype Technicians often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to frequent design changes and managing tight project deadlines. They must troubleshoot unforeseen technical issues that arise when translating design concepts into working prototypes, often requiring creative problem-solving and adaptability. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and other technicians is essential, as communication gaps can lead to delays or errors. Staying organized and maintaining high attention to detail helps ensure prototypes meet strict quality and performance standards.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

The Electronics Assembly/ PCBA Prototype Technician performs hands-on assembly, testing, and circuit-level troubleshooting for high- and low-voltage electric power conversion systems—including inverters, on-board chargers, AC-to-DC, and DC-to-DC converters. Operating in a prototype and NPI (New Product Introduction) environment, this role collaborates closely with design engineering to diagnose board failures, perform high-reliability PCBA rework to IPC Class 3 standards, build wire harnesses, and document build logs to support smooth transitions into manufacturing

Responsibilities
  • Partnering with engineering to troubleshoot board failures and running functional tests using multimeters and power supplies
  • Supporting wire harness builds (IPC-620), maintaining inventory/kitting, documenting build logs, and drafting work instructions to help move prototypes into production
  • Build and solder prototype power electronics (onboard chargers, AC-to-DC, and DC-to-DC converters, and inverters). Perform precision PCBA rework based on engineering dispositions, including trace cuts, soldering components, adding jumper wires, and applying/removing conformal coatings
  • Engineering & Documentation Support: Interpret electrical schematics, assembly drawings, and design specs to assist engineering in mechanical and circuit troubleshooting. Support the development of test fixtures, testing methods, work instructions, and manufacturing routers for product traceability
  • Harnessing & Standards Inspection: Inspect circuit boards per IPC standards (IPC-A-610/J-STD-001) and fabricate wire harness assemblies per IPC/WHMA-A-620C guidelines
  • Manufacturing & Operations: Support factory production during NPI (New Product Introduction) and production transitions. Manage material inventories, kit parts, process shipping/receiving of components, and maintain rework/soldering equipment following preventive maintenance schedules

Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, or an equivalent technical field
  • Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in PCBA assembly, electronic testing, and electro-mechanical prototype environments
  • Hands-on experience performing soldering to IPC Class 3 standards (high-reliability electronic products)
  • Proficiency with IPC-A-610 (Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies) and J-STD-001 (Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies)
  • Practical knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620C guidelines for cable and wire harness assembly
  • Hands-on experience working within strict Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protected areas and protocols
  • Solid command of standard laboratory test gear, including digital multimeters (DMMs), and DC power supplies
  • Proven ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics, engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and mechanical assembly blueprints
  • Circuit board testing and diagnostic experience, including electro-mechanical control circuits and component specification analysis. Circuit board design experience is a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively across cross-functional departments (Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality) and external vendor/customer contacts
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets) and JIRA for task tracking and documentation
