What is a senior prototype technician?

Senior Prototype Technicians are skilled professionals responsible for building, testing, and refining prototype products or components before they go into full-scale production. They work closely with engineers and designers to interpret technical drawings, assemble prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and provide feedback for design improvements. Their expertise is crucial in ensuring that prototypes meet design specifications and function as intended, helping companies innovate and bring new products to market efficiently.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a senior prototype technician?

To thrive as a Senior Prototype Technician, you need advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, strong problem-solving abilities, and experience with prototype fabrication, usually backed by a technical degree or relevant certifications. Expertise in using CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and rapid prototyping tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills for collaborating with engineers and iterating designs. These skills ensure the efficient creation and refinement of prototypes that meet design specifications and project deadlines.

What challenges does a senior prototype technician face during the product development cycle?

Senior Prototype Technicians often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to frequent design changes and managing tight project deadlines. They must troubleshoot unforeseen technical issues that arise when translating design concepts into working prototypes, often requiring creative problem-solving and adaptability. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and other technicians is essential, as communication gaps can lead to delays or errors. Staying organized and maintaining high attention to detail helps ensure prototypes meet strict quality and performance standards.

Job description

About Mytra:
We're creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We're applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We're focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a "sleepy" industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.
About the role
As an Engineering Technician I at Mytra, you'll join our Bot Prototype team and learn the craft of prototype building hands-on. Our team builds, maintains, and repairs the fleet of prototype bots, subassemblies, and test assets that let Engineering validate designs quickly - and we're looking for someone early in their technician career who works well with their hands, is eager to learn, and wants to grow into owning builds of their own. You'll work closely alongside more experienced technicians, starting with well-defined assembly and build tasks and taking on more as your skills grow. This is not a role for someone who wants to drive the same bolt every day. Designs change, parts arrive with quality issues, and priorities shift - and the best fit is someone who stays curious and steady when the plan moves, and who's excited to build a foundation in robotics prototyping.
What you'll do:
  • Assist with mechanical assembly and wire harness build-up on bots, subassemblies, and test assets, working from drawings, BOMs, and direction from senior technicians and engineers.
  • Perform assigned build and rework tasks using established procedures, building comfort with fasteners, torque, crimping, and basic soldering under guidance.
  • Identify and report build issues clearly and promptly, flagging what looks off so the team can diagnose and resolve it.
  • Record build logs, measurements, and results accurately using provided formats and our ticketing system.
  • Use hand and shop tools (drill press, band saw, chop saw, grinders, rotary tools) to cut, modify, and rework parts under supervision.
  • Support validation and bring-up tasks under engineer or senior-technician direction, capturing data cleanly.
  • Help keep the lab and shop safe, clean, organized, and well-stocked.

Ideal Candidates
  • Have some hands-on experience with mechanical or electro-mechanical work through a job, a trade/technical program, personal projects, or similar, and want to build on it.
  • Are comfortable with basic hand tools and eager to learn assembly, harnessing, and shop-tool fundamentals.
  • Can read and follow instructions, drawings, and procedures, and ask questions when something isn't clear.
  • Communicate respectfully and clearly, share updates, and raise issues early.
  • Are comfortable in an industrial environment working around heavy equipment, and follow PPE and shop safety practices consistently.
  • Are excited about robotics and the build/break/fix/prototype cycle, and want to grow into more responsibility over time.

Nice to have:
  • Coursework, certificate, or training in mechatronics, electronics, manufacturing, or a related technical field.
  • Exposure to soldering, crimping, or reading electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD (Onshape or comparable) - we'll give you time to ramp.
  • Forklift and/or personnel lift certification.
  • Any exposure to ticketing or project-management tools (e.g., Linear, JIRA).

A Final Note:
If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply - even if you don't check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we're lifelong learners committed to getting better every day. We move fast, learn faster, and show up for each other under pressure. The best outcomes come from diverse perspectives working together to build something meaningful and built to last
Benefits Include:
  • Competitive compensation and equity grants at a high-growth company backed by top-tier VCs
  • Fully subsidized health coverage, including medical (baseline plans), dental, and vision for employees and dependents
  • 401(k) plans and employer-subsidized life insurance
  • Fully subsidized lunch and snacks at HQ-we eat and share stories together at the "long" table
  • Generous PTO and company-paid holidays, including one week over the winter break so everyone can recharge together
  • Voluntary pet insurance, Voluntary Life Insurance, Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity
  • Fully subsidized tax advisory services and education to help you understand your equity
  • Commuter benefits, including a up to $150 monthly commuter benefit
  • Lively, modern combined office and lab space where we rapidly iterate through design, build, and test phases
  • Fully equipped onsite gym and showers at headquarters

Pay Notice
Compensation for this position will be set based on the candidate's experience level and location. The posted salary band is applicable only to the San Francisco Bay Area and is subject to change.
This role requires on-site presence at our Brisbane, CA headquarters, for close collaboration with the other teams.
The pay range for this role is:
32 - 37 USD per hour (Mytra, Inc.)
