What does a senior property accountant do?

A Senior Property Accountant manages and oversees the financial operations of real estate properties, including preparing financial statements, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations. They often supervise junior accountants, handle budgeting and forecasting, and work closely with property managers to track income and expenses. Their role is critical for maintaining accurate financial records and supporting strategic business decisions for property owners or management companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior property accountant?

To thrive as a Senior Property Accountant, you need advanced knowledge of accounting principles, property management accounting, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance. Proficiency in property management software (like Yardi or MRI), Excel, and experience with GAAP compliance are typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and collaboration with property managers and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting decision-making, and ensuring regulatory compliance in real estate operations.

Job description

Senior Property Accountant – Multifamily Required | Remote

SPM, LLC, a third-party property management company overseeing 170+ multifamily communities across 12 states, is hiring a Senior Property Accountant with a multifamily accounting background to own full-cycle property accounting for a portfolio of residential assets. Candidates without multifamily property accounting experience will not be considered. This is not a fit for general corporate accounting, commercial real estate, or single-family/homeowner association backgrounds. Strong fit requires hands-on fluency in both Entrata and Yardi.

What You'll Do

  • Manage full-cycle accounting for an assigned multifamily property portfolio, including journal entries, accruals, and general ledger maintenance
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and owner reporting packages
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Analyze budget-to-actual variances and partner with property managers on trends and NOI
  • Serve as the accounting liaison to auditors, property managers, and Regional/VP leadership during close and audit cycles
  • Monitor cash positions, funding requests, and critical payment timing across assigned properties
  • Ensures that financials are in accordance with GAAP for year-end audits and tax returns.
  • Assist with system-level accounting setup for new property onboarding and PMS transitions

Required Qualifications

  • Multifamily property accounting experience is mandatory. This is a hard requirement, not a preference — apartment communities, student housing, or affordable multifamily portfolios
  • 10+ years of property accounting experience, specifically within multifamily property management required
  • Hands-on experience with both Entrata and Yardi
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA is a plus
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort managing multiple property closes on deadline
  • Excellent communication skills and experience presenting financials to non-accounting stakeholders

You'll thrive here if you take ownership of a portfolio like it's your own, you're comfortable being the accounting voice in conversations with property managers and VPs, and you'd rather solve a close discrepancy than hand it off.

Benefits & Perks

  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Voluntary Life & Disability Insurance
  • Paid holidays, personal, vacation, and sick time
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Immediate access to earned wages
  • Employee Assistance Program and wellness resources
  • Collaborative, supportive team culture
  • Meaningful work supporting communities where residents feel at home

SPM, LLC is an Equal Opportunity Employer and maintains a drug-free workplace.
