What is a senior project designer?

A Senior Project Designer is an experienced professional responsible for leading the design aspects of large and complex projects, often within industries such as architecture, interior design, or engineering. They oversee the creative process, collaborate with clients and stakeholders, and ensure that the project vision is executed effectively from concept to completion. Senior Project Designers also mentor junior staff, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that designs meet both aesthetic and functional requirements while staying within budget and timeline constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior project designer?

To excel as a Senior Project Designer, you need advanced design skills, a relevant degree (such as architecture or interior design), and extensive experience managing design projects. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of building codes and project management methodologies, is often required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and creative problem-solving abilities help you collaborate effectively and drive design innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality, client-focused solutions within project timelines and budgets.

What are the main challenges senior project designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Project Designers often juggle several projects at various stages, which requires balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, timelines, and client expectations. One of the main challenges is ensuring consistent quality and cohesive design direction across all projects, while effectively prioritizing tasks and delegating responsibilities within the design team. Additionally, frequent coordination with other departments—like engineering, construction, and project management—demands strong communication and problem-solving skills. Staying organized and adaptable is key to successfully navigating these complexities.

Job description

Join a global leader in mining technology. FLSmidth is a leading mining equipment supplier supported by a global team of talented and ambitious employees across more than 60 countries. You will be joining the Downstream Gold product line within the FLSmidth group. This team provides gold and silver recovery systems and equipment to clients around the globe. Our multidisciplinary group includes process, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers, as well as designers, working together to meet the high expectations of our clients. We engineer high‑quality equipment and systems designed to meet the demanding needs of the precious metals industry and support reliable operation for years to come. Our goal is to become the leading equipment and systems provider in the gold and silver recovery market.

Senior Designer Responsibilities

Develop functional 3D model layouts for ADR and refinery projects by interpreting P&IDs, equipment lists, and process requirements, including equipment arrangement, piping corridors, access platforms, maintenance areas, and material flow paths. Create efficient plant layouts that support process requirements, client expectations, constructability, operability, and long‑term maintainability. Work closely with the Chief Engineer to establish the initial project layout concept and develop it into a usable design foundation for the engineering team. Collaborate with process, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers to ensure layouts meet discipline‑specific requirements. Coordinate with other designers to develop layouts, general arrangement drawings, equipment models, piping layouts, platforms, supports, and related design deliverables. Interface with clients to understand site constraints, operating preferences, access requirements, and project‑specific layout expectations. Coordinate with vendors to incorporate vendor equipment dimensions, maintenance clearances, access needs, connection points, and installation requirements into the project model. Evaluate equipment placement and routing to support efficient piping design, material handling, operator access, maintenance access, and safe operation. Identify layout conflicts, design risks, constructability concerns, and access limitations early in the project and work with the engineering team to resolve them. Support knowledge transfer of specialized ADR and refinery layout practices, standards, and project execution methods. Help establish consistent layout practices and design standards for Downstream Gold projects. Review and check design work for accuracy, completeness, interdisciplinary coordination, and alignment with project requirements. Support project execution by providing layout input during proposal development, detailed engineering, client reviews, vendor coordination, and design reviews. Mentor and assist less experienced designers in ADR/refinery layout development, modeling practices, and coordination with engineering disciplines. Maintain strong communication with project stakeholders to ensure the design model remains current, coordinated, and suitable as the foundation for downstream engineering deliverables.

What You Bring

Strong experience developing 3D plant and equipment layouts using SolidWorks. Proficiency with AutoCAD for 2D layouts, general arrangement drawings, and design documentation. Knowledge of structural steel shapes, including beams, channels, angles, tubing, plate, grating, stairs, platforms, and supports. Working knowledge of piping systems and components, including pipe routing, fittings, valves, flanges, supports, and maintenance clearances. Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment lists, vendor drawings, and project specifications. Experience laying out industrial equipment with consideration for process flow, operator access, maintenance needs, and constructability. Strong spatial awareness to coordinate equipment, piping, steel, platforms, and access ways in a functional layout. Ability to identify layout conflicts, access issues, piping congestion, and constructability concerns early in design. Experience coordinating with engineers, designers, clients, and vendors to resolve design issues. Strong attention to detail and ability to produce clear, accurate, and practical design deliverables. Willingness to learn specialized ADR and refinery systems and support knowledge transfer within the team. 5–10 years of experience in industrial layout development, equipment arrangement, or plant design.

What We Offer

Generous benefits package including health, dental, disability, life, and voluntary insurance options starting on day one. A global network of supportive colleagues and opportunities for professional growth. Work‑life balance supported by a flexible remote work policy, allowing you to focus on both professional and personal priorities. Time to recharge through PTO, 10 annual holidays, and parental leave.
