What you will do:
Reporting to the Project Accounting Manager, the Senior Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing the full accounting life cycle for multiple complex construction projects, including multi-phase and multi-building developments. This role manages project accounting processes from setup through closeout, ensures accurate job cost reporting and reconciliations, supports owner requisitions and audits, and provides financial insight to project leadership. The Senior Project Accountant also assists with the supervision, mentoring, and development of junior accounting team members.
Manage the full project accounting life cycle for multiple complex construction projects, including project setup, cost tracking, billing, reconciliations, and closeout.
Prepare, review, and analyze complex owner requisitions, including accounts receivable, retainage, contract revenue, supporting documentation, and related reconciliations.
Maintain accurate job cost records by categorizing, recording, analyzing, and monitoring project costs, committed costs, budget adjustments, change orders, and projected costs to complete.
Reconcile project accounting records to the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers, ensuring accurate reporting for preconstruction and construction agreements, including GMP and fixed-price contracts.
Analyze budget-to-actual variances, investigate underlying causes, identify financial risks, and recommend corrective actions to Project Executives and project management.
Partner with Project Executives, Project Managers, and accounting leadership to provide timely financial reporting, project performance analysis, and actionable financial insights.
Maintain strong internal controls over project finances, including document management, approval workflows, reconciliation procedures, and compliance with company accounting policies.
Identify departmental inefficiencies or control deficiencies, work with the CFO and accounting leadership to evaluate root causes, and recommend practical process improvements.
Prepare special financial analyses, schedules, and ad hoc reporting as requested by management.
Mentor, develop, and provide daily guidance to junior project accounting team members.
What you should have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive construction accounting experience, including responsibility for complex project accounting, job cost reporting, owner requisitions, and project closeout.
- Strong understanding of construction contracts, change orders, retainage, commitments, cost codes, budget revisions, and project cost controls.
- Experience supporting multi-phase or multi-building construction projects preferred.
- Proficiency with construction accounting and project management systems required; experience with Sage Intacct and Procore preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, and Sharepoint; strong Excel skills should include PivotTables, lookup formulas, queries, filters, and related reporting tools.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, reconciliation, and financial reporting skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with project executives, project managers, accounting leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize competing deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work independently in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Ability to safely navigate active construction sites, including climbing ladders and stairs, using job hoists, and working in inclement weather or areas that may be hazardous, cluttered, or poorly lit.
Salary Range
The pay range for this role is $118,000 to $130,000 annually. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
