What is a senior programmer?

Senior Programmers are experienced software developers who take on advanced coding tasks and often provide technical leadership within their teams. They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems, as well as mentoring junior developers. Senior Programmers typically have strong problem-solving skills, deep knowledge of programming languages, and experience with software architecture. They may also be involved in code reviews, setting best practices, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-quality software solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in programming languages, solid software development experience, and often a relevant degree or equivalent expertise. Familiarity with frameworks, version control systems like Git, and agile development tools is typically required, and certifications in cloud platforms or specific technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills enable effective collaboration and mentorship within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering robust, scalable solutions and driving technical excellence in complex projects.

How do senior programmers typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on team productivity?

Senior Programmers often play a key mentorship role by guiding junior developers through code reviews, pair programming, and sharing best practices. They provide technical leadership and help troubleshoot complex issues, ensuring code quality and knowledge transfer across the team. This mentorship not only fosters professional growth for junior members but also contributes to stronger team cohesion and faster problem-solving, ultimately boosting overall productivity and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectSenior ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; extensive coding experienceBachelor's degree often preferred; coding skills essential
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, project-based work, often in tech or software companiesSimilar environments; involved in designing, coding, testing software
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other industries requiring software solutionsCommonly used in software firms, startups, and corporate IT departments

While both roles involve coding and software development, a Senior Programmer typically has more experience, takes on complex tasks, and may mentor junior staff. A Software Developer focuses on designing and building software applications, often with less emphasis on leadership or advanced technical oversight.

What do senior programmers do?

Senior programmers design, develop, and maintain software applications, often leading projects and mentoring junior team members. They analyze user requirements, write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure software quality using programming languages and development tools. Their role also involves reviewing code, optimizing performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Sharetec is looking for a Senior Programmer to join our team!
At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of people's lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology, and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.
The Role
As a Senior Programmer on our Customer Experience team, you'll be a core technical problem-solver keeping Sharetec's systems running reliably for credit unions across the country. You'll diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues within our highly customized, legacy Progress ABL codebase and the infrastructure around it - Progress databases, Linux servers, and ISO 8583 communication systems.
This role is about ownership as much as code. You'll take large, ambiguous problems, break them down to root cause, and work cases through to full resolution - knowing when to bring systems back up on your own and when to escalate. You'll also support your teammates, share what you learn, and participate in the on-call rotation that keeps our core systems dependable.
If you enjoy untangling legacy systems, thrive under pressure, and take pride in seeing a hard problem all the way through, this role may be for you.
Position Details
This is a full-time, exempt position. You may work remotely from anywhere in the United States, with the exception of California, or in a hybrid capacity from our offices in Fort Wayne, Indiana or Waco, Texas. Travel is minimal. This role participates in an after-hours on-call rotation.
The starting salary range for this position is $85,000 - $95,000 BOE + bonus.
Who Will Love This Job
  • Someone who finds more satisfaction in making something better than building something new - and understands why that's harder
  • Someone who believes that technology serving people's financial lives is worth doing with real care and precision
  • Someone who is energized by a company in motion - where the roadmap is growing and your contributions shape the direction
  • An analytical problem-solver who can take a large, ambiguous problem and break it into solvable pieces
  • Someone who is self-driven and takes ownership of a case all the way through to resolution
  • Someone who stays effective and calm under pressure without losing quality or urgency
  • Someone who enjoys working with legacy code and non-traditional program structures, and adapts readily as systems change

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues within Sharetec's legacy Progress ABL codebase and non-traditional program structures
  • Break large, complex problems down into manageable components to identify root cause
  • Work cases through to full resolution, escalating to other departments when appropriate
  • Bring systems back up independently when they go down, knowing when and how to escalate
  • Close an average of 10-12+ cases per week and resolve them within defined SLAs
  • Assist teammates with case load and troubleshooting as needed
  • Communicate clearly with the team and across the broader organization on case status and technical issues
  • Participate in the routine on-call rotation
  • Maintain and grow fluency in Progress ABL, Progress databases, and related infrastructure, staying current through training and self-study

Requirements
Qualified Candidates Should Have
Required
  • Associate's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience or certification in programming, software engineering, IT, or database administration
  • Ability to work with legacy code bases and non-traditional program structures
  • Experience in Progress ABL, SQL, or a similar language
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, stressful environments
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues - taking large problems and breaking them down
  • Ability to communicate effectively within the team and across the larger organization
  • A self-driven, adaptable, and continuous-learning mindset

Preferred
  • Experience managing Progress databases
  • Experience managing Linux servers and troubleshooting performance
  • Knowledge of C#, TypeScript, or Angular
  • Experience with ISO 8583 communication systems
  • Financial services knowledge or experience
