Job description

The Production (Underwriter) is responsible for underwriting and marketing accounts throughout approved states/territories, developing new business, managing assigned agencies, selecting advantageous risks, and building a profitable portfolio of accounts. The role requires working closely with the underwriting department to analyze applicant risk, monitoring loss ratios, and taking corrective action to remain profitable. Regular marketing presentations to prospective clients and ongoing agent performance development are also key responsibilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Own the results of the book of business, balancing distribution and risk selection to drive profitable growth.
  • Maintain and lead relationships with assigned agents and broker partners.
  • Engage in activities to generate submissions and close accounts.
  • Develop and underwrite a profitable portfolio in support of business plans.
  • Structure tailorโ€‘made solutions, taking into account underwriting parameters and exposure.
  • Monitor premiums, costs, and claims ratios per contract and take corrective measures as necessary.
  • Evaluate appropriate risk premium to ensure profitability, considering reinsurance, capital exposure, and operating costs.
  • Comply with underwriting control standards for business written through delegated authority.
  • Engage with leadership to solve problems and support business unit initiatives.
  • Support leadership with presentations and special projects as Centers of Expertise or as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5โ€“7+ years of production underwriting experience or 2+ years of commercial underwriting experience (for Sr. Production Underwriter).
  • Proven sales results and client service experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of underwriting philosophy, processes, and practice.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Effective relationshipโ€‘management skills with a customerโ€‘focused approach.
  • Ability to develop and execute a tactical underwriting plan.
  • Active listening and emotional intelligence.
  • Independent work ability and strong timeโ€‘management skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office, especially Excel.
  • Property & Casualty Agentโ€™s license in the residing state, or willingness to obtain CPCU, AUโ€‘M, CIC designations (a plus).
  • Willingness & ability to travel for agency visits and industry functions.
  • Commitment to continuing education to maintain necessary credentials.
