What does a senior process development engineer do?

A Senior Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They often lead teams in scaling up processes from the laboratory to full production, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new technologies or methods. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production, to ensure processes meet regulatory and safety standards. Their expertise helps companies maintain competitive advantages and meet production goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior process development engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Process Development Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or mechanical engineering, process optimization, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, process simulation tools (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), and Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for developing efficient, scalable processes that meet quality standards and business goals.

What are some common challenges a senior process development engineer may face when scaling up a new process from the lab to full production?

Senior Process Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining product quality and consistency when transitioning from small-scale laboratory experiments to large-scale manufacturing. This process typically involves troubleshooting equipment limitations, optimizing process parameters, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial to address these challenges and achieve a smooth scale-up. Adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate unexpected issues that may arise during this transition.

What is the difference between Senior Process Development Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectSenior Process Development EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; experience in process developmentBachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentResearch and development labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-functional teamsManufacturing plants, production lines, process optimization teams
Industry UsagePharmaceuticals, chemicals, biotech, manufacturingManufacturing, chemical processing, consumer goods

The main difference is that Senior Process Development Engineers focus on developing and optimizing new processes, often in R&D settings, while Process Engineers typically oversee existing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality. Senior roles involve more strategic planning and innovation, whereas Process Engineers focus on day-to-day process operations.

Job description

Hadrian - Manufacturing the Future

Hadrian is building autonomous factories to reindustrialize America. By combining AI, advanced software, robotics, and full-stack manufacturing, we help aerospace and defense companies build rockets, satellites, aircraft, ships, and other mission-critical systems up to 10x faster and at significantly lower cost.

Following our $1.37B Series D at a $7.87B valuation, Hadrian is rapidly expanding our manufacturing footprint, launching new capabilities across welding, casting, forging, electronics, additive manufacturing, and more, while scaling our Factory-as-a-Service platform to transform how critical products are built.

Backed by leading investors including JPMorgan Chase, Valor Equity Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, 137 Ventures, Lux Capital, T. Rowe Price, and Morgan Stanley, we’re building the future of American manufacturing—and looking for exceptional people to help make it happen.

If you’re ready to take on the most challenging and rewarding work of your career while helping create American manufacturing jobs for generations to come, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

Within Additive Manufacturing, you'll be the go to technical resource for process development, owning how we build, iterate, and automate the way we develop and mature our additive processes across various types of additive manufacturing. We're not approaching this the way additive has traditionally been done. We're rethinking it from the ground up, using automation, AI, and new software tools to move past the constraints that have limited additive. You'll be the process expert tying materials, process, and in process monitoring together, delivering the kind of innovative approach that lets us move quickly and work past the time constraints that have historically slowed this work down. This role is for someone ready to be challenged and take on highly technical work with the resources to push for innovation in additive manufacturing, helping build and refine the tools and processes that make our additive capabilities faster and more scalable over time.

The Role

  • Lead process and parameter development for additive processes, with a primary focus on metals. Executing DOEs to define and measure process windows and drive machine, material, and process readiness.

  • Drive adoption of in situ monitoring, statistical process control, and digital traceability records.

  • Build software tools internally, or evaluate and implement existing tools on the market, to accelerate parameter development and process automation.

  • Continuously research, evaluate, and bring in novel tools and technologies that support and strengthen process development capability.

  • Design and build automated workflows and creative methods to efficiently validate and implement.

  • Serve as the point of contact for developing specific parameter needs tied to unique part geometries or to overcome platform specific challenges.

  • Work closely with the materials engineering team to roll out, validate, and implement new parameters and processes into production.

  • Work cross functionally with applications engineers, materials engineers, systems engineers, software engineering, and welding engineers.

What We're Looking For

  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline.

  • 3+ years of experience developing and optimizing parameters and processes for additive manufacturing, with a strong focus on metal processes.

  • Hands on experience with additive manufacturing equipment and software, including build processors or process simulation tools.

  • Experience building or improving automated workflows, scripting, or tooling to speed up process or parameter development.

  • Ability to work closely with materials engineering to translate new materials into validated, production ready processes.

  • Comfort working in an undefined space, building new processes and tools rather than relying on established norms.

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (required for ITAR compliance).

What Will Set You Apart

  • Extensive experience in LPBF as the primary process, with DED experience as a secondary strength.

  • Background in aerospace, aviation, defense, energy, or similar industries with high specification requirements.

  • Experience with in situ process monitoring and using that data to inform parameter development.

  • Programming or scripting experience, such as Python, used to automate engineering workflows.

  • Familiarity with industry specialized material standards, certification requirements, or quality systems such as NADCAP, AMS7000 series, AS9100, and relevant ASTM/AMS additive manufacturing specifications.

  • Familiarity with fracture control classification of components and associated qualification requirements.

  • Prior support of production scale up in high-rate manufacturing environments.

Compensation:

For this role, the target salary range is $135,000 - $200,000 (actual range may vary based on experience).

This is the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Benefits for Full-time Employees
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans for employees

  • 401k

  • Relocation support may be provided for certain situations, based on business need.

  • Flexible vacation policy

  • Equity

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
