The main difference between a Senior Power Systems Engineer and a Power Systems Engineer lies in experience level and responsibilities. Senior engineers typically have more advanced expertise, oversee complex projects, and may mentor junior staff. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but senior roles often demand greater industry experience and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior power systems engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, power system analysis, and typically a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering along with several years of relevant experience. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as ETAP, PSS/E, MATLAB, and familiarity with relevant standards and certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) licensure are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient design and operation of complex power systems.

What are some common challenges senior power systems engineers face when working on large-scale grid integration projects?

Senior Power Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing project timelines, and ensuring regulatory compliance when integrating large-scale renewable energy sources into existing grids. They must also address grid stability and reliability issues, particularly when dealing with variable generation from renewables. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver successful project outcomes.

Precise Systems delivers integrated, mission-ready solutions that advance warfighter readiness and strengthen our nation's most critical defense programs. Through the power of our combined capabilities, we provide deep expertise in Advanced Engineering; Digital Transformation; Electromagnetic Warfare; Interactive Training & Simulation; Physical Sciences Research; Platform Lifecycle Support; and Foreign Military Sales. Unified by decades of trusted performance and expanded through strategic growth, our team applies innovative technologies, engineering rigor, and customer-focused execution to solve complex challenges and accelerate mission success. Guided by our commitment to partnership, precision, and performance, we deliver the scalable solutions and technical excellence our customers depend on-today and into the future.
Precise Systems is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the development, integration, testing, fielding, and lifecycle sustainment of multiple systems. The engineer will apply systems-engineering principles to translate operational needs into clear, traceable, and testable requirements; manage system interfaces; evaluate technical risks; and support informed program decisions across hardware, software, test, logistics, cybersecurity, and configuration-management teams. This role requires in-person support and may include limited travel for technical reviews, integration events, testing, and fielding activities. This role requires in-person support.
Duties:
• Analyze operational needs and develop, review, allocate, and maintain system and subsystem requirements and traceability.
• Support system architectures, functional baselines, design alternatives, and technical trade studies.
• Develop and review Interface Control Documents and coordinate hardware, software, network, data, and subsystem interfaces.
• Support laboratory and field integration activities and help resolve interface, performance, and compatibility issues.
• Define verification methods and acceptance criteria and support test plans, procedures, verification matrices, and reports.
• Participate in systems-engineering technical reviews, including SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and production-readiness reviews.
• Identify and track technical risks, issues, assumptions, and dependencies and support root-cause and corrective-action efforts.
• Evaluate Engineering Change Proposals, deviations, waivers, and design changes for impacts to requirements, interfaces, test, logistics, cybersecurity, production, and sustainment.
• Develop and review specifications, engineering reports, technical assessments, briefings, decision papers, and related systems-engineering documentation.
• Coordinate lifecycle and sustainment activities involving reliability, maintainability, supportability, obsolescence, fielding, and transition to operational use.
Required Education:
• Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Required Experience:
• Seven (7) years of relevant experience in systems engineering, system integration, requirements management, acquisition engineering, test and evaluation, or related technical work.
• Experience developing, allocating, validating, and managing system requirements and requirements traceability.
• Experience supporting system architecture, interface analysis, system integration, verification, validation, or qualification activities.
• Ability to translate operational needs into technical requirements, verification methods, and supportable engineering solutions.
• Experience preparing technical products such as specifications, requirements documents, Interface Control Documents, engineering reports, verification matrices, test documentation, and recommendations.
• Experience identifying technical risks, analyzing failures or performance issues, and developing mitigation or corrective-action recommendations.
• Strong analytical, technical-writing, briefing, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively across engineering, logistics, test, cybersecurity, configuration-management, and program-management organizations.
Desired Experience:
• Experience supporting Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, NAVSEA, NSWC Crane, Army product-manager, or comparable military acquisition programs.
• Experience supporting PdM FITE or similar force-protection, Electronic Warfare, communications, or mission-system programs.
• Familiarity with the DoD acquisition lifecycle and systems-engineering technical reviews.
• Experience with requirements-management or MBSE tools such as IBM DOORS, Jama, Cameo, SysML, or comparable applications.
• Experience developing Interface Control Documents and verification and validation traceability products.
• Experience evaluating Engineering Change Proposals, deviations, waivers, configuration changes, and technical-baseline impacts.
• Experience supporting production, fielding, sustainment, reliability, maintainability, or supportability activities.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
